Since its founding, it has changed addresses, lost buildings, adapted programmes, weathered war, shifted with policy changes, survived enrolment pressures and entered multiple new seasons of leadership. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Founded on October 11, 1921, The Chinese Kindergarten is known as Singapore\u2019s first kindergarten. More than a century later, its story is not merely one of historical significance, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but of a mission that God has kept through generations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #e53333;\">The planting of a seed<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The story of <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten began with a burden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the early 1920s, Xu Dongfan, a Christian teacher from Hubei, China, noticed a gap in Singapore\u2019s education landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_159809\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-159809 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/02-Mr-Xu-Dong-Fan.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"220\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A portrait of <span class=\"s1\">Xu Dongfan.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While much attention was given to primary education, there was little emphasis on preschool education. He believed children could be given a stronger foundation if they were nurtured earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That conviction found support among church leaders and members of the Chinese Christian community. Together, they raised funds, found a site and began what would become <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was a modest beginning. The founders were not merely starting a school. For many schools, the interruption marked the end. But God preserved <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After the war, the kindergarten resumed operations with more children than ever. As Singapore\u2019s post-war baby boom drove enrolment, it operated morning and afternoon sessions to accommodate more than 1,600 students.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_159813\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-159813 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/06-Ck-1949-Grad.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"257\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduating students of <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten (both primary and kindergarten sections) in December 1949.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1946, it also opened a preschool at Jubilee Church on Outram Road. Together, the two schools served more than 2,000 children, making The <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Chinese Kindergarten one of the largest and most established schools in Singapore at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #e53333;\">Preserved through loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the school experienced periods of significant growth, it also endured seasons of loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By the 1970s, as English-medium education became parents\u2019 preferred choice, many Chinese schools saw falling enrolment. <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten was not spared, and its primary section closed in 1978.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then came another blow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 1991, after 70 years on Tras Street, <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten was forced to relocate to Jubilee Church\u2019s current premises on Outram Road, after their historic site was acquired for redevelopment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_159814\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-159814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/07-32-Tras-Street-Present-Day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/07-32-Tras-Street-Present-Day.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/07-32-Tras-Street-Present-Day-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The corner of 32 Tras Street, where <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten used to be, is now a hotel. Photo from www.best-singapore-hotels.com.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite losing much of its physical heritage, its education mission continued \u2013 in different forms, but with the same calling.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elder Jonathan Lee, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Success was, and is, not simply about enrolment numbers or financial profit. The deeper test was whether children grew up knowing God\u2019s Word. The heart of the work was always the Gospel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unless God says stop, he said, the work should continue. But why?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #e53333;\">More than a piece of history<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Yeo Dai Yun, the current board Chair, preservation for its own sake is the wrong reason to keep going.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf there is no distinctly faith-shaped difference, there is no reason to continue,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The task is not to preserve a brand, a name, or even a beloved institution at all costs. Neither is it to simply replicate what private or secular preschools offer.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span>Chinese Kindergarten\u2019s calling must shape not only what children are taught, but how teachers are cared for, how families are served, and how the school walks through transitions.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-SG\" xml:lang=\"EN-SG\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\">To\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\">preserve the school<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\">, then, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW80324343 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-SG\" xml:lang=\"EN-SG\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\">is to preserve a window through which the Church can love families, serve the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\">neighbourhood<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80324343 BCX0\"> and bear witness to God\u2019s heart for children, said Dai Yun.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW31184131 BCX0\">Katherine <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW31184131 BCX0\">Seow<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW31184131 BCX0\">, who was the kindergarten\u2019s Principal from 2019 to 202<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW31184131 BCX0\">4, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this means helping children grow in truth, love and courage. <\/span>In a world of competing voices, <span class=\"s1\">children need to learn not only what is true and right, but also how to live out those convictions with Christ-like love, kindness and grace.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_159816\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-159816 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/09-Ms-Seow-2020s.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"262\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katherine Seow, The Chinese Kindergarten\u2019s 13th principal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rev Wong Siow Hwee, the previous Senior Minister of Jubilee Church, added that i<\/span>n a meritocratic society where children are often measured by achievement, Christian education offers a different way of seeing the child: Not first by merit, but as one made and loved by God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Rev Wong, evangelism may be a fruit of the work, but it is not the only reason\u00a0the school\u00a0exists. The deeper conviction is that this is God\u2019s world, and good education helps children see the beauty of the world and of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #e53333;\">Saying \u201cyes\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">Through the years, the school\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">w<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">as preserved because of the multitude of people\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">w<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">ho\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">w<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">ere\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">w<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">illing to keep on <\/span><span class=\"FindHit SCXW251828047 BCX0\">w<\/span><span class=\"FindHit SCXW251828047 BCX0\">at<\/span><span class=\"FindHit SCXW251828047 BCX0\">er<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251828047 BCX0\">ing the seed that was planted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Former Principal Wong-Thng Lay Choo, who led the school from 2004 to 2019, never set out to lead it. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">While overseas on a teacher-training practicum, she cut short her trip to return for her predecessor\u2019s funeral. At the memorial service, the then-Chairman unexpectedly handed her the keys to the school and asked her to take over as Principal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She stepped into leadership because, as she put it, \u201csomeone just had to do the job\u201d. She now<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0sees herself as part of the school\u2019s calling to serve the community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today, that means teaching children hope \u2013 that they are loved, have a future, and can deeply know the God who loves them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #e53333;\">A ministry, not a business<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To Rev Wong Wee Khong, the current Senior Minister of Jubilee Church, the school r<span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW166876798 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166876798 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">emains<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166876798 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0an important\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166876798 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">ministry of the church.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Though the relationship between church and kindergarten has taken different forms over the years, the connection has always stayed: Church members served on its board. Jubilee Church would still worship, teach, fellowship, serve and engage in missions. But it would lose a particular window into the community, one that God has entrusted to them, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Education, he added, cannot be complete if it concerns itself only\u00a0with knowledge.
