{"id":66943,"date":"2026-07-08T03:50:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T19:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66943"},"modified":"2026-07-08T03:50:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T19:50:07","slug":"strategically-aligned-singapore-indonesia-want-strait-of-malacca-open-and-free-for-all-say-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66943","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Strategically aligned\u2019: Singapore, Indonesia want Strait of Malacca open and free for all, say leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">JAKARTA \u2013 Singapore and Indonesia have pledged to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/why-anxieties-are-rising-over-the-malacca-strait-asias-key-shipping-route?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">the Strait of Malacca<\/span><\/a> open, safe and accessible to all, elevating maritime security to the forefront of a bilateral relationship that both countries increasingly see as critical to regional stability and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The commitment emerged after talks on July 6 between <!-- -->Prime Minister Lawrence Wong<!-- --> and President Prabowo Subianto at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/pm-wong-to-visit-jakarta-for-the-singapore-indonesia-leaders-retreat-on-july-6?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">the annual Leaders\u2019 Retreat<\/span><\/a>, where they stressed the importance of safeguarding one of the world\u2019s busiest shipping routes amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Reaffirming the two countries\u2019 \u201cspecial\u201d and \u201cunique\u201d relationship, the leaders held discussions that highlighted how the relationship is evolving beyond trade and investment into new areas such as renewable energy, cross-border electricity trade, digital infrastructure and supply chain resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe Leaders\u2019 Retreat is a unique feature of the Singapore-Indonesia relationship. It reflects the special relationship between our two countries, one that is characterised by close ties, as well as mutual trust, respect and understanding,\u201d said PM Wong at a joint press conference with President Prabowo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the same vein, President Prabowo underscored how both countries share a responsibility to safeguard regional security and economic growth. \u201cProsperity will never come without peace and stability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Strait of Malacca, which connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, carries a significant share of global trade and energy shipments, making it one of the world\u2019s most strategically important maritime corridors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Prabowo said Indonesia and Singapore had reaffirmed their shared position on the waterway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIndonesia and Singapore are countries that directly border one another in the Strait of Malacca. We have a shared interest in maintaining the Strait of Malacca as a passage that is free for all parties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe must preserve security and peace in the strait, and also, of course, protect it from pollution, accidents, and from robbery or piracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that Indonesia would continue coordinating with Malaysia and Thailand to ensure that, in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/opinion\/unclos-is-40-today-should-we-celebrate?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)<\/span><\/a>, the strait would \u201calways remain open to all, safe and accessible to anyone who requires access\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong struck a similar note, linking maritime security to wider global developments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said recent events in the Middle East had highlighted the importance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/opinion\/lessons-on-toll-free-shipping-from-straits-of-malacca-and-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">of keeping major trade routes functioning and secure<\/span><\/a>. The Iran war had choked off traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to disruptions in global trade and the supply of oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAs littoral states bordering the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, both Singapore and Indonesia are strategically aligned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe both share interest in upholding navigational rights and freedoms, and keeping sea lines of communication open to all, including the unimpeded rights of transit passage of vessels, in accordance with UNCLOS which is also customary international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The two leaders agreed to work with other littoral states to ensure that the <!-- -->Strait<!-- --> of Malacca and Singapore remain safe, open and accessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Prabowo said Singapore and Indonesia shared common interests as neighbours in the same region, adding that peace and stability required constant effort and cooperation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cStability and peace are not something that will come by themselves,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must carry it out without rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments. President Prabowo said they had reaffirmed ASEAN\u2019s longstanding position that disputes should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy, a principle he said should apply \u201cnot only in our region, but in all regions\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">New growth areas<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While maritime security featured prominently at the retreat, much of it also focused on expanding cooperation into new sectors expected to shape both economies in the years ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Among the most significant developments was progress on cross-border electricity trade, which both countries see as a cornerstone of future energy cooperation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Indonesia announced that sovereign investment fund Danantara would take the lead in implementing cooperation on cross-border electricity trade, as well as future collaboration in trade, energy and the digital economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore and Indonesia also signed new agreements involving Danantara and Singapore firms Keppel Electric, Sembcorp Industries and Singapore Energy Interconnections, which are aimed at advancing discussions on future electricity exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said the arrangements would provide a road map for negotiations and pave the way for a cross-border electricity project between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He described the initiative as a \u201cwin-win\u201d project and an important building block for a wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/grid-reforms-vital-to-powering-aseans-green-growth-report?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">ASEAN Power Grid<\/span><\/a> that could strengthen regional energy security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong also highlighted a planned solar project in Morowali in central Sulawesi, where Singapore and Indonesia are collaborating to develop renewable energy. The area is one of Indonesia\u2019s largest nickel processing centres, where energy-intensive industries have driven growing demand for electricity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThis will unlock the clean supply of electricity to power industries there,\u201d he concrete outcomes\u201d, while both leaders agreed to continue strengthening supply chain resilience and economic connectivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said the two sides also agreed to strengthen institutional links, adding that in particular, good relations between the Singapore Armed Forces and Tentara Nasional Indonesia, Indonesia\u2019s national armed forces, foster trust between the two countries.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Vote of confidence in Indonesia<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The retreat also served as a strong endorsement of Indonesia\u2019s economic prospects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong repeatedly stressed Singapore\u2019s confidence in Indonesia\u2019s future and signalled that Singapore intends to remain a long-term partner in the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSingapore has every confidence in Indonesia\u2019s future,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want Indonesia to succeed because our futures are closely linked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said Singapore\u2019s investments in Indonesia went beyond capital flows and were helping to create businesses, downstream industries, digital investment, create jobs and support Indonesia\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For his part, President Prabowo emphasised the strength and maturity of the bilateral relationship, saying the two leaders had held \u201cintensive and highly productive discussions\u201d which were \u201cheart to heart\u201d and \u201cforward-looking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said both sides had agreed that any misunderstandings or differences would be addressed candidly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe agreed that if there are misunderstandings or misperceptions, we will resolve them as friends, openly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Prabowo said the relationship rested not only on cooperation between governments but also on strong ties between ordinary Indonesians and Singaporeans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cA strong partnership is built on the basis of trust, not only between governments but also between the peoples of both countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The talks reflect a broader effort by both countries to link their economic and strategic interests more closely as they prepare to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a statement, Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two leaders agreed to work closely during Singapore\u2019s ASEAN chairmanship in 2027 and looked forward to commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Reflecting on the strength of bilateral ties, both PM Wong and President Prabowo emphasised the close and enduring partnership between Singapore and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\"
