Without air conditioning, he has been sweating through the night, losing sleep three to four times a week in June. By morning, fatigue slows his delivery pace, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The reduced pace and more frequent breaks shave three to four deliveries off his daily average of 30, he estimates, cutting his earnings by around $14 to $19 every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For Zeng, the worry is not just the heat he faces now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Meteorologists warned that the mercury may continue to rise. A stronger version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/what-is-a-godzilla-el-nino-and-how-could-it-affect-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">El Nino is forecast for later this year<\/span><\/a>, potentially bringing drier, hotter conditions to South-east Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">El Nino is a weather pattern where trade winds weaken and warm water shifts eastward across the Pacific, raising sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific. A survey of 1,000 Singapore residents suggests that heat is increasingly affecting people\u2019s lives and well-being. They ranked hotter weather and heat stress as their top concern arising from climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Conducted in April 2026, the survey was commissioned by SPH Media and Temasek Foundation, with respondents drawn from Kantar\u2019s Profiles Audience Network. Kantar is an independent market research firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Eighty-two per cent of them said heat stress disrupts their daily lives at least once a month. Performance Centre at NUS\u2019 Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">What we are concerned about is a \u2018hot body\u2019, or heat strain, not (just) a hot environment,\u201d says Lee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Heat strain occurs when the body cannot remove excess heat, causing internal temperature to rise.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-16 p-16 tablet:p-24 border border-default nested-element rounded-md break-words tablet:break-normal\" data-testid=\"nested-elements-test-id\">\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Enabling a more liveable world<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Global temperatures could hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/global-temperatures-to-reach-near-record-highs-in-next-five-years-report-finds?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">near-record highs in the next five years<\/span><\/a>, warned the World Meteorological Organisation in a May report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The urgency to act is rising, says Heng Li Lang, Head of Climate &amp; Platforms like The Liveability Challenge (TLC) aim to bridge that gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Presented by Temasek Foundation and organised by media company Eco-Business since 2018, TLC is an annual global crowdsourcing platform focusing on addressing urban challenges in the tropics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is Asia\u2019s largest sustainability solutions platform, its website states, and has incubated 62 start-ups and deployed around $18 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/singapore-and-french-start-ups-win-big-at-the-liveability-challenge-with-scalable-green-solutions?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">latest finale on May 20<\/span><\/a>, it committed its largest funding pool of up to $4.3 million, with two winners taking home $1 million each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This year\u2019s challenge called for solutions across two themes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-list-container\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-test-id\">\n<ul class=\"pl-22 list-disc article-list-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><b>Decarbonisation <\/b>focuses on reducing emissions where they are being generated, like power plants. One of this year\u2019s winners, Singapore-based Metha8, converts the chemical methanol into clean electricity at 60 per cent efficiency \u2013 twice that of conventional diesel generators \u2013 without releasing harmful emissions, says Heng.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-list-container\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-test-id\">\n<ul class=\"pl-22 list-disc article-list-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><b>Cool Earth<\/b> targets solutions that help people adapt to extreme weather events, particularly heat. The most severe is heat stroke, characterised by body temperature usually at about 40 deg C or higher, with delirium, he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2025, 398 people were treated for heat-related illnesses at accident and emergency departments in Singapore, nearly double the annual average of 200 from 2020 to 2023, according to Ministry of Health data cited by Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao. Hospitalisations also rose to 81, up from an annual average of 50 over 2020 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lee says not all heat-related injuries are as severe as heat stroke. Nearly half of 416 HDB flats studied recorded warmer temperatures than outdoors, especially where ventilation was hindered by indoor clutter and closed windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">With little relief from heat, the day\u2019s stress can build up further, he says.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Managing the heat<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The world is experiencing \u201cglobal boiling\u201d, says Heng Li Lang, Head of Climate &amp; Liveability at Temasek Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cHeat stress is one of the most visible and immediate impacts of climate change,\u201d she says, pointing to its growing effects on public health, productivity and liveability, particularly in Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Asia has warmed faster than the global average in recent decades, at roughly twice the rate from 1991-2025 compared with 1961-1990, according to a World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) report in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The impact of heat extends globally. France, the Netherlands and Belgium recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/at-least-3700-excess-deaths-reported-during-heatwave-in-france-belgium-and-netherlands?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">at least 3,700 excess deaths during the June heatwave<\/span><\/a> according to local authorities, and the toll may still rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Addressing climate change requires solutions that help people adapt to rising temperature, adds Heng, alongside efforts to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. (See box above)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">What does adaptation look like in daily life?<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That could mean building heat tolerance through outdoor exercise and acclimatisation, because as Lee warns, \u201ca small pot boils the quickest\u201d.
