{"id":66622,"date":"2026-07-06T23:43:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T15:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66622"},"modified":"2026-07-06T23:43:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T15:43:01","slug":"singapore-opposition-parties-leadership-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66622","title":{"rendered":"Singapore opposition parties&#8217; leadership changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 Two political parties that contested at the 2025 General Election have had recent changes to their leadership teams, according to announcements made on July 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Progress Singapore Party (PSP) central executive committee (CEC) member Stephanie Tan, a political newcomer who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-pap-wins-west-coast-jurong-west-grc-with-60-vote-share-keeps-pioneer-smc?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">contested Pioneer SMC<\/span><\/a>, has left the opposition party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Separately, People\u2019s Power Party (PPP) said that its secretary-general Goh Meng Seng and chairman Derrick Sim have stepped down from their posts and a new party chief had been appointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Tan, who was the PSP representative for a televised roundtable discussion during the hustings, said she was leaving because of differences in opinion in PSP\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a social media post, she reflected on her political journey which started in August 2023, when she signed up to be a PSP volunteer. She wanted then to contribute to greater vibrancy and discussions on important issues which matter to Singaporeans, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt has been such a fulfilling journey and while I remain hopeful to continue contributing to Singapore, it will no longer be through PSP due to differences in opinion in the direction of the party,\u201d said Tan, 38.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Tan,<!-- --> <!-- -->a homemaker and former lawyer<!-- -->,<!-- --> thanked PSP founder Tan Cheng Bock for understanding and respecting her decision, and for his encouragement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She said that she will be taking some time to evaluate her next steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At GE2025, Tan garnered 34.55 per cent of the votes against the PAP incumbent Patrick Tay \u2013 she was PSP\u2019s best performer in a single member constituency out of the four it contested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Overall, PSP fielded 13 candidates in six constituencies at the polls and suffered a decline in vote share compared with its first electoral outing in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Tan was later<!-- --> <!-- -->co-opted into the PSP CEC in July 2025 following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/tan-cheng-bock-and-hazel-poa-step-down-from-psp-leadership?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">a leadership renewal<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/psps-cec-renewal-shows-its-commitment-to-being-a-reasonable-alternative-choice-says-stephanie-tan?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">told The Straits Times then<\/span><\/a> that the changes represented the first step of the party\u2019s plans to come back from the disappointing performance and that it intends to update its image by putting more of its younger members in the public eye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She has in the past year been spotted at PSP\u2019s activities in the west of Singapore, such as at market walkabouts and home visits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ST has approached PSP for comment. Tan declined to provide further details when contacted.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">People\u2019s Power Party changes its leaders<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a Facebook post, PPP said it has completed its plan to renew its CEC, with Goh, 56, and Sim, 45, stepping down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">William Lim Lian Chin has been elected as the secretary-general of the party, it said. Lim contested in Ang Mo Kio GRC in GE2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Goh said in his own Facebook post that he and Sim had decided to step down from their leadership positions right after GE2025, but that \u201cas responsible leaders, we held back and allowed the party to reorganise and determine its new leadership and direction before we officially stepped down\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The pair was part of the PPP slate that stood in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-pap-retains-tampines-grc-in-4-way-fight-wins-tampines-changkat-smc?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">four-way contest in Tampines GRC<\/span><\/a>.
