{"id":66523,"date":"2026-07-06T14:50:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T06:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66523"},"modified":"2026-07-06T14:50:03","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T06:50:03","slug":"singapore-couple-budgets-150000-for-year-long-trip-with-3-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66523","title":{"rendered":"Singapore couple budgets $150,000 for year-long trip with 3 kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->In 2014, Daniel Ng and Gina Cheong backpacked for 10 months<b> <\/b>through lesser-visited destinations including Armenia, Georgia, Mongolia and parts of Central Asia, spending $10,000 each on the whole trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The couple,<!-- --> <!-- -->both 38, regard the journey as one of the greatest adventures of their lives. They married in 2019 and are co-founders of video production company Aww Media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThat overland trip was life-changing. Despite the difficulties, we really enjoyed it and felt that there was a lot to learn from our experience,\u201d says Cheong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More than a decade later, they set off on their next great adventure \u2013 this time with their three children in tow. In December 2025, they embarked on an extended journey across the world with Ryden, six; Rylyn, four; and Ryla, two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ng and Cheong had long dreamt of taking their children to explore some of the world\u2019s more remote destinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe felt like it was the right time. Now, they are not too young, such that it becomes too difficult to travel with all of them, but also not too old, such that they might not be so willing to travel with us,\u201d says Cheong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">With Ryden due to<b><i> <\/i><\/b>start primary school in January 2027, the couple felt this would likely be their last opportunity to do a long family trip. Unlike their backpacking days, however, travelling as a family of five requires a different budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">During their 2014 journey, where they camped, ate simply and travelled mostly overland, the couple each spent an average of about $40 a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This time, they set aside about <!-- -->$150,000 for the trip<!-- -->, using savings they had accumulated over several years. The sum covers flights, accommodation, activities and day-to-day expenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cheong says: \u201cWe felt the money could always be earned back later, but this precious time with our children cannot be bought. I was so nervous, I must have gone through the packing list a million times in my head,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Singapore, the <!-- -->family live<!-- --> in a four-room Housing Board flat and have a domestic helper. <!-- -->The couple<!-- --> also rely on Ng\u2019s parents for help with caregiving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Preparation began almost a year before departure. From early 2025, the couple gradually introduced the idea of the trip to their children and extended family. They used family holidays to China, Malaysia and Australia as \u201ctrial runs\u201d to test how the children would cope with extended travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Knowing the trip would be physically demanding, both parents built up their strength and stamina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cheong signed up for a gym membership in May 2025<b><i> <\/i><\/b>and woke up at 5am every weekday to train for six months. Ng exercised at home while undergoing physiotherapy for an old knee injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt was necessary because we had to carry our children and very heavy bags on this trip. And in case of any emergency or if we found ourselves in a dangerous situation, we needed to have the strength to handle all three kids and run to safety,\u201d Cheong says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The couple also attended a first aid course and basic self-defence classes to better prepare for emergencies. Gina and her husband Daniel had long dreamt of taking their children to explore some of the world\u2019s more remote destinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular inline text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> <!-- -->PHOTO: GINA CHEONG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Now, roughly seven months into the journey, the family have travelled through 15 countries, including destinations like Morocco, Ethiopia, Jordan and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They document their day-to-day life on their Instagram account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sunriseodyssey\/?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">@sunriseodyssey<\/span><\/a>, where users often leave comments lauding their bold venture and numerous far-flung destinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But Ng insists it is not about \u201ckeeping count of the countries\u201d. Instead, he says they move at a pace that suits the family and visit places that are not too touristy so they have a more immersive experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To stretch their budget, the family keep spending on accommodation and meals to a minimum so they can splurge on activities like tours and guided hikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Most nights are spent in apartments booked through property-rental platform Airbnb or other online property booking sites,<!-- --> <!-- -->typically costing between $30 and $50 a night. They cook at least two meals a day, and purchase <!-- -->one<!-- --> meal at foodcourts or fast-food restaurants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe value experiences, so that\u2019s what we are willing to spend more on,\u201d says Cheong.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base instagram instagram-embed\" title=\"instagram embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZ0zEFcDn49\/embed\/captioned\/?omitscript=true\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That philosophy has allowed the family to visit places that many tour operators told them were impossible with three young children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Among the toughest was Ethiopia\u2019s Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and harshest places on <!-- -->earth<!-- -->. Temperatures there can exceed 40 deg C and visitors can spend hours trekking across its landscapes of sprawling salt flats, colourful acid springs and volcanic terrain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Known to be a geographical wonder, the Danakil Depression is a geological basin where three tectonic plates \u2013 the Arabian, Nubian and <!-- -->Somalian<!-- --> plates \u2013 are being pulled <!-- -->farther<!-- --> apart. Scientists predict that in millions of years, the area will eventually be submerged in water as the rift diverges far enough for the Red Sea to flood it, creating a new ocean.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After much searching, the couple eventually found a travel agency willing to take their family on a tour. All three children completed the hour-long trek despite the unforgiving heat. Their youngest, Ryla, has been in a carrier for the majority of treks so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Guatemala, they scaled the dormant stratovolcano Acatenango and, from near its summit,<!-- --> <!-- -->watched the active <!-- -->Fuego<!-- --> stratovolcano <!-- -->across them erupt multiple times<!-- -->. The overnight trip involved around eight hours of hiking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Yet the journey has not been entirely smooth-sailing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Their most challenging point was when all three children fell seriously ill with diarrhoea in Ghana. They stayed in a comfortable Airbnb<!-- --> <!-- -->in capital city<!-- --> <!-- -->Accra,<b> <\/b>cooking simple meals and waiting for the children to recover fully before continuing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen the kids fall sick, it is tough. But when we fall sick too, it is worse because only one parent might be left to take care of the whole family,\u201d says Ng.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There were other close calls too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Peru, Ng sprained his ankle just before a hike<b> <\/b>to the iconic Incan citadel Machu Picchu and another to the roughly 5,000m-high Rainbow Mountain, raising fears they would have to abandon their treks. He was able to continue with the activities, but his injury has not fully healed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe scary part is not the sprain. It\u2019s managing everything else, like carrying the bags and taking care of our kids <!-- -->even when<!-- --> I\u2019m down. The show needs to go on,\u201d Ng says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The couple also underestimated the cost of travelling across Africa, such as flights within the continent. But for the couple, it is a compromise worth making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never once regretted this journey. For us, work takes up five days of our week in Singapore and <!-- -->we see our kids only at night<!-- -->, which is usually a rush to get them to have dinner and go to bed,\u201d says Cheong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo, weekends are our precious time with them and now, every day is like a weekend. Once Ryden starts primary school, future holidays will likely be limited to the June and December school breaks, making regional trips a more realistic option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For now, however, they are focused on making the most of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Cheong hopes other families who dream of taking a similar leap will not wait for the perfect moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cJust go with an open mind and a sense of adventure.
