{"id":66509,"date":"2026-07-06T13:28:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T05:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66509"},"modified":"2026-07-06T13:28:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T05:28:00","slug":"nus-introduces-minor-in-criminal-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66509","title":{"rendered":"NUS introduces minor in criminal justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Undergraduates interested in criminal justice will be able to pursue it as a minor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) from January 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The programme will allow students to look more closely at the criminal justice process, which can cover policing and prosecution as well as rehabilitation and reintegration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It will be run jointly by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and the Faculty of Science at NUS, which offer the various courses counted under the minor. Students must pass a minimum of five courses to declare the minor \u2013 two core and three elective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This new programme is a response to strong interest in these individual courses, which are often oversubscribed, said an FASS <!-- -->spokeswoman<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She said that there has been \u201csustained student demand over several years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These courses include sociology of deviance, law and society, intimate and gender-based violence and forensic science, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The programme\u2019s academic convenor, Narayanan Ganapathy, said: \u201cCrime is no longer just a legal issue or a policing issue. It is also shaped by social, economic, technological and political forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said students should learn to understand not only why crime occurs, but also how criminal justice institutions and society can respond effectively to increasingly complex forms of criminality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cOur aim is to prepare graduates who can think critically across disciplines and contribute to evidence-informed policymaking and practice in the criminal justice sector,\u201d said the associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ganapathy said FASS is also looking to establish a master\u2019s programme in criminal justice and criminology.
