{"id":66453,"date":"2026-07-06T07:59:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T23:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66453"},"modified":"2026-07-06T07:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T23:59:09","slug":"world-cup-fever-after-hours-matches-leave-singapore-businesses-on-the-bench","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=66453","title":{"rendered":"World Cup fever: After-hours matches leave Singapore businesses on the bench"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"article-description\">F&amp;B operators are staying selective as late kick-off timings raise cost and labour considerations<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" data-testid=\"article-body-container\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[SINGAPORE] The World Cup may be generating plenty of buzz among football fans, but the cheer and action has not fully spread to F&amp;B operators in Singapore\u2019s Central Business District (CBD).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">With <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/lifestyle\/surprises-and-goals-galore-dazzling-world-cup-s-worth-staying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this year\u2019s tournament<\/a> taking place in cities around North America, the time difference means many matches fall late at night or in the early hours of the morning in Singapore. Several key matches are being  held at 3 am and 5 am local time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Businesses in the Republic have therefore had to weigh whether extending operating hours makes commercial sense; they have also been circumspect about rolling out too many World Cup-related programmes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5 mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">The issue of timing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">At rooftop venue 1-Arden, one key adjustment has been to extend operating hours only for certain games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Earlier in the tournament, it screened several afternoon matches, but it soon began receiving enquiries on whether it would show the later games as well. It is now planning to screen the two semi-finals, the third-place play-off and the final, rather than the full schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201c<a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/lifestyle\/perhaps-fifa-was-right-about-world-cup-ticket-pricing-after-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The difference this time<\/a> is really the timing,\u201d said Immelia Izalena, associate director of marketing at 1-Arden. \u201cThe previous edition had friendlier screening hours, while this year\u2019s final matches are much later, so we are being more selective with the fixtures we take on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The 2022 World Cup took place in Qatar, which has a five-hour time difference with Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Izalena pointed out that the crowd for the next few screenings will \u201cnaturally be different\u201d because of the timing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWe expect to attract more dedicated fans, as well as groups who are looking for somewhere comfortable to watch the key games together,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table mx-auto\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/ef8217d28e8d95e191620488a586c5bdf055c2a76647bac368b57c7f4f2b2204\" alt=\"\" height=\"1520\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Harry\u2019s is screening World Cup matches only at its Boat Quay location. <span>PHOTO: HARRY\u2019S<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Harry\u2019s, meanwhile, is screening World Cup matches only at its Boat Quay venue. Screening the tournament was a natural move, it said, given its positioning as a sports-friendly venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Stephanie Howe, head of marketing at Harry\u2019s, said that some matches drew significantly higher footfall, while others were quieter, <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/lifestyle\/world-cup-turnout-defies-concerns-americans-flock-spectacle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depending largely on the teams playing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Matches such as Australia versus Turkey, Tunisia versus Japan and Brazil versus Japan drew the largest crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Despite the stronger turnout for those games, the bar is not screening everything. Its operating hours may be extended to catch the early-morning fixtures depending on demand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Operators are weighing if the additional demand can cover the\u00a0additional labour, utilities and logistics costs. Demand is highly dependent on the teams involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">At Brotzeit in Raffles City, the German dining establishment is screening selected matches, with crowds showing up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Carsten Kjeldmann, managing director of Brotzeit, described the atmosphere at these screenings as \u201clively and energetic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThe turnout has been very positive,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019ve welcomed many enthusiastic football fans, including several large groups who have chosen Brotzeit as their gathering spot to watch the matches.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/639076a635f40e3d168a6ab03dca24c1064df336ede65bf2d781c74912c77c02\" alt=\"\" height=\"855\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">German bar and restaurant Brotzeit is screening selected World Cup matches at its Raffles Place venue. <span>PHOTO: BROTZEIT<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The outlet had a sizeable crowd watching a delayed screening at around 11 am on Friday (Jul 3).<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Brotzeit will continue to screen selected matches live, including the semi-finals and final. Kjeldmann said that turnout is generally stronger for more popular matches.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5 mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">One venue stays open all night<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">One outlier is Gigi Gastrobar and Bistro at The Sail at Marina Bay, which is screening all matches live and has extended its hours to operate round the clock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Speaking to <em>The Business Times<\/em>, owner Gigi (who declined to give his full name) said that the move was less about immediate returns and more about serving regular customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWe knew it was not going to be a big moneymaker for us, but we felt we had to do this for our customers. That\u2019s why we did it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gigi added that footfall has remained modest overall due to the match timings, although interest picked up for matches involving Asian teams or crowd favourites such as Brazil, France and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The gastrobar has also had to adjust <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/singapore\/fb-industry-mulls-higher-menu-prices-offshoring-and-closures-wages-set-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its service crew and chefs\u2019 working hours<\/a> to accommodate the shift in operations.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5 mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Banks keep celebrations internal<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">On the corporate front,\u00a0World Cup-related activities are largely confined to internal staff engagement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">UOB, Standard Chartered (StanChart) and HSBC said that they have organised activities for employees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">UOB management associates partnered the group\u2019s human resources department to launch a month-long Wellness World Cup programme from for employees.
