SINGAPORE \u2013 A Singaporean man was fined RM20,000 (S$6,300) in Malaysia for illegally filling his Singapore-registered car with subsidised RON95 petrol in April.<\/p>\n
He pleaded guilty in a Johor court, and was sentenced on July 2 to the fine, or three months\u2019 jail in default, Malaysian news outlets New Straits Times (NST) and Astro Audio reported.<\/p>\n
The man, who is in his 50s, paid the fine on the same day.<\/p>\n
He was caught on April 9 during an operation by officers from Malaysia\u2019s Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).<\/p>\n
Investigations found that he had committed an offence under the Control of Supplies Act by buying the subsidised petrol using a foreign-registered vehicle.<\/p>\n
Johor KPDN director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said the successful prosecution proved the ministry\u2019s continuous commitment to combating the misappropriation of controlled goods to protect consumer interests and ensure national supply stability, NST reported.<\/p>\n
It has been illegal since April 1 for drivers of foreign-registered vehicles to buy subsidised RON95 petrol in Malaysia<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n The law allows enforcement action to be taken against both petrol station operators found supplying RON95 to foreign-registered vehicles, and the drivers and owners of such vehicles.<\/p>\n Previously, only petrol station operators were subject to legal action.<\/p>\n The first person to be arrested after the ban came into place was a man who filled his Singapore-registered car with the subsidised petrol at a station in Johor Bahru on April 9.<\/p>\n A petrol station near Kuala Lumpur was also being investigated in April after a motorist driving a Singapore-registered car was caught filling up with RON95 petrol.<\/p>\n KPDN said then that a case had been filed against the petrol station, and copies of related documents were later seized for further action and investigation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n SINGAPORE \u2013 A Singaporean man was fined RM20,000 (S$6,300) in Malaysia for illegally filling his Singapore-registered car with subsidised RON95 petrol in April.
