We need to act fast to save the remaining greenery that defines our neighbourhood,” he added.

The concerns come just as nearby Tiong Bahru has seen several mature trees removed.

According to a notice issued by HDB, six trees along Eng Watt Street were recently felled to facilitate construction of a new car park.

The notice stated that the trees’ roots had caused the driveway to heave, creating potential safety hazards.

But some residents were not convinced.

“Do they really need to cut down all six trees in Eng Watt Street for a new car park???” wrote a netizen on the Tiong Bahru Social Page Facebook group.

The same resident also claimed neighbours received the notice only one day before works began, leaving little opportunity for feedback.

Why mature trees are being replaced

While mature tree removals often spark strong reactions among residents, there may be another reason behind some of NParks’ recent decisions.

Earlier this year, The Straits Times reported that NParks has been progressively replacing certain mature Khaya and sea apple trees across Singapore.

This is because the two species are more susceptible to basal rot, a fungal disease that weakens trees from the base and damages their anchoring roots.

If left untreated, affected trees may become unstable, increasing the risk of falling trunks or branches.

As a result, NParks has been replacing affected trees with species considered better suited to Singapore’s long-term urban landscape, including rain trees, shore laurels and sea gutta trees.

8days.sg has reached out to NParks for more information, but did not receive a response by press time.

Netizen reactions were mixed over the matter.

Some argued every mature tree is worth protecting, especially as Singapore experiences hotter temperatures.

“No excuses need to be given to cut down trees for development works,” read a comment.

Another bemoaned the time it takes for trees to grow.

“We behave as if we have another 20 or 50 years to wait for newly planted saplings to reach this size, when the climate emergency is already here. Every mature tree standing today is precious,” explained a netizen.

But a growing number online felt safety had to come first.

“NParks do not remove trees without reason. Tree preservation is important, but safety is a top priority,” one commented.

Another added: “Trees are living things. They grow old, fall sick and die. I’m sure if they could be saved, NParks would have done it.”

If you have ever walked around Redhill Close, you will know the towering trees are just as much a part of the neighbourhood as the…

[2611

post-65807","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-buzz-headlines","wpcat-2611-id
["GET
