\nnumber of Taiwan\u2019s wealthy families are moving part of their fortunes to
\nSingapore, as concerns over geopolitical uncertainty and cross-strait tensions
\nreshape how they manage and protect their assets.<\/p>\n
Financial advisers, private bankers and business owners say
\nSingapore has increasingly replaced Hong Kong as the preferred offshore wealth
\nhub for affluent Taiwanese, thanks to its political stability, well-developed
\nfinancial sector and attractive tax environment.<\/p>\n
The trend comes as relations between Beijing and Taipei
\nremain strained, prompting many high-net-worth individuals to diversify not
\nonly their investment portfolios but also where they hold their wealth and
\nestablish their family businesses.<\/p>\n
Among them is Taiwanese businessman Sunny Huang, who told
\nBloomberg that he recently chose Singapore as the base for his family\u2019s textile
\nbusiness after considering other locations, including Hong Kong and Dubai.<\/p>\n
Singapore has since approved his application to establish a
\nfamily office, while he and his brother have also secured employment passes.<\/p>\n
Huang said the move was not driven by a desire to leave
\nTaiwan, but to ensure his family has a financial safety net if geopolitical
\nconditions worsen.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means having a place for the plane to land in an
\nemergency,\u201d Huang said. \u201cIf something unexpected happens, at least
\nour assets are protected instead of having to start over with nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that although he is proud to be Taiwanese,
\npreparing for uncertainty has become increasingly important.<\/p>\n
Singapore overtakes Hong Kong<\/strong><\/h3>\nFor decades, Hong Kong served as the main offshore financial
\ncentre for Taiwanese investors seeking international diversification.<\/p>\n
However, that pattern has changed significantly in recent
\nyears.<\/p>\n
According to a joint report by Taiwan\u2019s E.Sun Bank and KPMG
\nTaiwan, Singapore has overtaken Hong Kong as the largest destination for
\nTaiwanese offshore wealth over the past three years.<\/p>\n
Taiwanese financial assets held in Singapore have reached
\napproximately NT$10.4 trillion (S$420 billion), surpassing the NT$9.6 trillion
\ninvested in Hong Kong, excluding property holdings.<\/p>\n
Business experts say the shift has accelerated since around
\n2016, when rising geopolitical concerns encouraged wealthy Taiwanese families
\nto reduce their exposure to Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
Allen Tsai, founder of the Taiwan Institute of Directors,
\ntold Bloomberg that more than 80% of Taiwanese offshore assets were once
\nconcentrated in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
Today, he estimates that roughly 60% to 70% are now managed
\nin Singapore instead.<\/p>\n
Professor Hsi-Mei Chung from Taiwan\u2019s I-Shou University said
\nSingapore\u2019s political neutrality, financial stability and easier residency
\npathways have strengthened its appeal, while Hong Kong\u2019s attractiveness has
\ndeclined amid changing political conditions.<\/p>\n
AI boom creates larger fortunes<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe movement of wealth comes as Taiwan experiences one of
\nthe fastest expansions in private wealth across Asia, largely driven by the
\nglobal artificial intelligence boom.<\/p>\n
According to UBS, Taiwan is now home to nearly 772,000
\nmillionaires, exceeding Hong Kong\u2019s estimated 628,000.<\/p>\n
As fortunes grow, many wealthy families are focusing more on
\nlong-term wealth preservation, succession planning and international
\ndiversification.<\/p>\n
Family offices have become an increasingly popular
\nstructure, allowing affluent families to manage investments, tax planning and
\ninheritance under one organization.<\/p>\n
Several Taiwanese companies have also begun relocating
\nregional operations to Singapore.<\/p>\n
Leo International Group, which operates businesses in asset
\nmanagement, healthcare and education, recently announced plans to move its
\nglobal headquarters to Singapore while establishing a family office there as
\npart of its long-term strategy.<\/p>\n
Another Taiwanese entrepreneur, identified only as Danny due
\nto the sensitive political nature of the issue, said he plans to relocate his
\nfamily to Singapore after already opening an office there several years ago.<\/p>\n
He said the city-state offers a more predictable environment
\nfor raising his children over the coming decades.<\/p>\n
Banking industry follows the money<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe relocation of Taiwanese wealth has also created new
\nbusiness opportunities for banks operating in Singapore.<\/p>\n
Major Singapore banks have expanded services targeting
\nTaiwanese high-net-worth clients, while Taiwanese lenders have strengthened
\ntheir local presence to support customers moving assets overseas.<\/p>\n
CTBC Bank, which established its private banking booking
\ncentre in Singapore in 2012, said assets under management there have grown to
\naround US$9 billion (S$11.64 billion), nearly doubling from less than US$4
\nbillion in 2020.<\/p>\n
The bank has also expanded the number of relationship
\nmanagers serving Taiwanese clients from five to about 20 during the same
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
Other Taiwanese banks are also increasing investments in
\nSingapore.<\/p>\n
Taipei Fubon Bank plans to enlarge its wealth management
\nteam in the city-state by the end of this year, while Taishin International
\nBank said assets managed by its Singapore branch have climbed from about NT$2
\nbillion in 2014 to NT$42.7 billion (S$1.73 billion).<\/p>\n
Sources familiar with the matter also said some state-backed
\nTaiwanese lenders are studying whether to expand into Singapore\u2019s private
\nbanking sector, attracted by the country\u2019s financial ecosystem and tax
\nadvantages.<\/p>\n
