From January 2028 onwards, new games released on PlayStation consoles will be available through the PlayStation Store and at retailers, but only in digital formats.

The announcement does not mean that existing physical PlayStation games will suddenly stop working or disappear from shelves. Sony says the transition will not affect games that have already been released, or games that will be released in disc format before January 2028. In other words, physical copies of current and upcoming disc-based titles should remain unaffected, while the change will apply to new game releases after the cut-off.

Still, the decision is a notable one for PlayStation, which has long maintained a physical games presence even as digital purchases, game subscriptions and downloadable content have become a larger part of the console business. The PS5 itself launched in both a standard disc-drive model and a Digital Edition, while later hardware revisions moved to a detachable disc drive approach. Sony’s latest announcement effectively signals that, beyond a certain point, the disc drive will no longer be relevant for new PlayStation releases.

For players, the impact will depend on how they currently buy and keep games. Those who already purchase most of their titles digitally may not notice much of a difference, especially if they are used to managing their library through the PlayStation Store. However, collectors, second-hand buyers and players who prefer physical ownership are likely to feel the change more negatively, as discs remain important for resale, lending, collecting and long-term preservation.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will end physical disc production for new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028, marking another significant…

[32

post-65598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech-gadgets-reviews","wpcat-32-id
["GET
