{"id":65184,"date":"2026-07-01T08:36:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T00:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=65184"},"modified":"2026-07-01T08:36:02","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T00:36:02","slug":"wing-seong-fattys-dishes-served-in-qantas-lounges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=65184","title":{"rendered":"Wing Seong Fatty&#8217;s dishes served in Qantas lounges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->As a young Royal Australian Air Force pilot in <!-- -->1974<!-- -->, <!-- -->Ronald Haack<!-- --> got a first taste of the \u201cbest Chinese food\u201d he had eaten, at Wing Seong Fatty\u2019s first location in Albert Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For the next five decades, the Australian returned to the restaurant whenever he was in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Haack, 74, who went on to become a Boeing 747 pilot with Australian airline Qantas and is now retired, did not find the restaurant by chance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Patronising the restaurant<!-- --> <!-- -->was a longstanding practice begun and sustained by his fellow air force servicemen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Cantonese restaurant was famed among pilots of the Royal Australian Air Force and Qantas, as the founder Au Yuen and his son Au Chan Seng \u2013 endearingly nicknamed \u201cFatty\u201d \u2013 had secretly <!-- -->given<!-- --> food to prisoners of war during World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It also became a haunt for crew from other carriers such as British Airways and Emirates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The restaurant announced on Facebook in April that it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/cantonese-restaurant-wing-seong-fattys-to-end-100-year-run?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">shutting down on June 28 after 100 years<\/span><\/a>, as it was unable to find a successor to continue the business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After learning about its impending closure, Haack and his wife immediately made plans to fly from Sydney to Singapore, to dine at Wing Seong Fatty\u2019s at Burlington Square in Bencoolen one last time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/4eac36376d0b897d609b3e37b7a25d81b35b7a76bdf28cdf20919e5c4f423562?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/4eac36376d0b897d609b3e37b7a25d81b35b7a76bdf28cdf20919e5c4f423562?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px and max-width: 3999px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/4eac36376d0b897d609b3e37b7a25d81b35b7a76bdf28cdf20919e5c4f423562?w=900\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 4000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/4eac36376d0b897d609b3e37b7a25d81b35b7a76bdf28cdf20919e5c4f423562\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/4eac36376d0b897d609b3e37b7a25d81b35b7a76bdf28cdf20919e5c4f423562\" alt=\"There were photographs of Qantas flights \u2013 gifted by Qantas air crew and captains \u2013 on display in the restaurant. On <!-- -->June 23<!-- -->, the day they were due to fly back<!-- --> <!-- -->to Australia, they arrived more than an hour before noon, when the restaurant opened for lunch.<\/p>\n<figure grandson of the restaurant\u2019s founder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI can\u2019t imagine Singapore without Fatty\u2019s,\u201d Haack told Au Kok Wing, who is otherwise known as Skinny because of his leaner build compared with his father, Fatty.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The week before, a group of Qantas crew organised a private farewell dinner there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At the June 19 dinner, an entourage of some 20 pilots \u2013 fronted by Qantas chief pilot Dick Tobiano \u2013 presented Skinny and three other Au siblings with scrapbooks of photos and notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Among the pilots was Tony Waters, training captain for the Qantas Boeing 737 fleet, whose fondest memories of the restaurant were from 2004 to 2012, when he took his children there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As his family relocated to Singapore during that time when he was seconded to the now-defunct Jetstar Asia, Waters said his children spent many evenings at the restaurant, with Skinny treating them to ice cream after dinner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey grew up knowing Skinny, Kelvin (Skinny\u2019s brother), and the rest of the family,\u201d the 56-year-old added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Noting that his 22-year-old daughter recently made a trip to Singapore just to eat at the restaurant before it closed, Waters said it showed how much Wing Seong Fatty\u2019s meant to her.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Through the decades, the restaurant became a cornerstone for social gatherings among Qantas crew, so much so that Skinny curated a \u201cQantas menu\u201d to make it easier for the crew to place orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It included dishes such as<!-- --> <!-- -->spring rolls, nuclear chicken<!-- -->, sweet and sour pork<!-- -->, black pepper prawns<!-- -->, vegetables, barbecued pork<!-- --> and fried rice, in addition to beer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Captain Brett Walker, who flies Qantas\u2019 Airbus A330 planes, welcomed this menu, as it \u201ctook the thinking out of ordering\u201d, since Skinny knew what dishes the pilots enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The 45-year-old said: \u201cDespite (Skinny) not having a conventionally welcoming demeanour, he would always give us a smile and make space for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The restaurant\u2019s history means something to Walker on a personal level, as his grandfather was interned at Changi Camp during the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMy grandfather used to tell me stories of the local Chinese who snuck him extra rice, claiming it kept him alive&#8230; (This kindness) is a very real and special thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When The Straits Times visited the restaurant on June 23, all tables were reserved,<!-- --> <!-- -->but there was still a queue of about 15 people waiting to enter as walk-in customers at noon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is also well-loved by<!-- --> <!-- -->some Singaporeans, including retired teacher Daniel Ng, 82, who has frequented the restaurant monthly for the past six decades. He<!-- --> <!-- -->had visited its first store in Albert Street with his parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ng described his last meal there as a way to give the restaurant \u201ca final send-off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lu Jiahui,<!-- --> <!-- -->a 36-year-old software developer, had joined the queue after discovering the restaurant on social media.
