As a teenager, she was plucked from her childhood home in Beijing and entered into the <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">selection of wives<\/span> to the Xianfeng Emperor. In 1852, she was chosen as a concubine of the sixth rank, but she managed to improve her standing over time thanks to her unusual upbringing.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In the book <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China<\/em>, author Jung Chang describes how Cixi\u2019s father treated her like a son and constantly spoke to her about topics typically off-limits to women at the time.
