{"id":64702,"date":"2026-06-29T15:24:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64702"},"modified":"2026-06-29T15:24:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:24:00","slug":"the-vampire-lestat-episode-4-the-devils-road-interview-and-creator-breakdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64702","title":{"rendered":"The Vampire Lestat Episode 4, \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Road\u201d Interview and Creator Breakdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Spoilers follow for <\/strong><u><strong>The Vampire Lestat<\/strong><\/u><strong> Season 3, Episode 4 &#8211; \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Road,\u201d which is available on AMC and AMC+ now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Abandonment issues run amuck this week in \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Road,\u201d the latest episode of AMC\u2019s series formerly known as <u>Anne Rice&#8217;s Interview With the Vampire<\/u>, starting with Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) still on the road with his band, but very preoccupied with the sudden mystery trip taken without explanation by his mother\/fledgling Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle).<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Showrunner Rolin Jones tells IGN that Gabriella\u2019s incestuous yet apathetic dynamic with her son is core to many of his existential problems. \u201cHe has mentioned a number of times in Season 1 and 2 that abandonment is a big deal for him,\u201d Jones says. \u201cSo you owe a very clear, \u2018Where did that start from?\u2019 It started from Mom. That&#8217;s straight from the book.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"box-wrapper jsx-2673806401\">\n<aside class=\"card jsx-1339469126 jsx-1178573261 box jsx-2627838217\" data-cy=\"aside\">\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>More From the Chronicles<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/section>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">For this series adaptation of Anne Rice\u2019s book, Jones says he and his writers approached this season as Part 1 and Season 4 as Part 2 to tell the full story of what\u2019s going on with their ensemble. In Part 1, Jones explains that they need Gabriella to be off-screen doing things that will pay off in the future. \u201cWe have very deliberately built it that way,\u201d the showrunner says of these mysteries.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Right now, \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Road\u201d is Lestat\u2019s point of view on this destructive relationship. \u201cHe&#8217;s finally alone with her in the past, and she&#8217;s abandoned him for nine days,\u201d Jones says of the flashbacks in this episode that reveal her history of callous, mercurial exits. \u201cHe just loses his mind. Though Louis and Claudia\u2019s story isn\u2019t revisited in Rice\u2019s books until Merrick (2000), Jones says they invented these encounters to keep Anderson and Hayles front and center in the show.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cI have two really, really good actors that I love, and there&#8217;s been a promise in a weird way, especially with Jacob, to the people who tuned in that he&#8217;s part of the show and we&#8217;re never giving that up,\u201d Jones says of their implicit pledge to the audience. \u201cWe have the freedom of not having to land on one book, so we had this thing in a later book that we thought was very, very ripe and interesting. And as you&#8217;re trying to shape something, you&#8217;re like, \u2018Oh, if that&#8217;s a destination point, what&#8217;s an interesting way to get there?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Jones says they also had some nagging things to follow-up on from Season 2. \u201cThe last image of the season, with the dress on the wall, me and Hannah always looked at that and were like, \u2018It&#8217;s beautiful. It&#8217;s lovely. It&#8217;s quite <em>neat<\/em>, isn&#8217;t it? <em>Hmm<\/em>.\u2019 And we felt, especially with Delainey\u2019s performance and the impact of it, there was more gas there to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><output class=\"box-wrapper jsx-2673806401\" data-cy=\"article-video\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 data-cy=\"title2\" class=\"title2 jsx-1903782357 jsx-3735650234\">The Armand and Molloy Twist<\/h2>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">After appearing in flashbacks and making a surprise appearance in ex-band guitarist Alex\u2019s (Seamus Patterson) AA meeting, Armand (Assad Zaman) weaves back into the main story on an apology tour aimed at his fledgling Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) and Lestat.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of agenda going on with Armand,\u201d Jones admits. \u201cAs we get deeper and deeper into writing him, he becomes sort of the mirror for who you are; you can see what you want to see in him. Embracing that mystery on the writing page, then seeing it embodied in what Assad does all the time, it&#8217;s really, really seductive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Jones says they always intended to include portions of Armand\u2019s arc from Rice\u2019s book in this series: \u201cWe&#8217;re just taking our organic time with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The show is also presenting it a little differently by reimagining how and when Armand turns Molloy and not sharing it with the audience <em>yet<\/em>. In Rice\u2019s book Queen of the Damned (1998), there\u2019s a whole chapter titled \u201cThe Story of Daniel, the Devil\u2019s Minion, or the Boy From Interview With the Vampire\u201d about Armand meeting Molloy in 1973, and then stalking him until he falls in love with the human and eventually turns him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"display-title jsx-684634384 jsx-2659527929 quote-container\" data-cy=\"quoteBox\">In the book, it&#8217;s all about a human and a vampire falling in love. We&#8217;ve removed that, and we&#8217;ve also aged [Molloy] up, so we have different circumstances.<span class=\"stack jsx-2959124702 jsx-326843967\"><span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Jones says they grappled with how to condense and retell what happens between Queen of the Damned Molloy, a.k.a. the Devil\u2019s Minion, and Armand. \u201cIn the book, it&#8217;s all about a human and a vampire falling in love. We&#8217;ve removed that, and we&#8217;ve also aged [Molloy] up, so we have different circumstances,\u201d he explains. \u201cBut we still owe the same sort of a weirdness to their manifestation, of what it&#8217;s like to be bonded between those two, and that was exciting for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">And so the show gives us in this episode Molloy following his sire out of Lestat\u2019s concert and being rendered speechless after Armand professes his love for him going back to Dubai. \u201cWe had to do delicate writing there about how do you pull that off and buy that?\u201d Jones says of the shocking moment. \u201cHow can you go back and look at Season 1 and Season 2 and go, \u2018I can see that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Jones says it works because of Bogosian\u2019s performance where myriad micro reactions play out on the actor\u2019s face. \u201cWe linger and we&#8217;re on camera with Eric [for] 75% of that scene,\u201d Jones points out. \u201cYou have to watch his face and he knows that it&#8217;s truthful.
