href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/will-pritam-singh-stay-or-be-ousted-as-wp-chief-unhappy-cadres-plan-to-put-up-a-fight?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a group of unhappy cadres failed to force his resignation at an earlier meeting on the same day.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This solidifies his leadership of Singapore\u2019s largest opposition party after several years of challenges stemming from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/a-lie-its-fallout-and-a-motion-before-parliament?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">former Sengkang GRC MP Raeesah Khan\u2019s lies to Parliament in 2021,<\/span><\/a> said analysts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Speaking to the media after his re-election, Singh said: \u201cThe party understands that its purpose is to behave in a rational and responsible way, and represent Singaporeans faithfully.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAnd if we want to continue to do that, I think we have to close ranks as any reasonable and respectable political party ought to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that the outcome of a secret ballot on his resignation showed that \u201cthe party is pretty united\u201d, while declining to reveal the vote\u2019s exact figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam, who chaired that meeting, said Singh had secured \u201cwell in excess of a supermajority\u201d of support from the party\u2019s inner circle, who number slightly more than 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Party sources said Singh received about 80 per cent of the vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The meeting had a robust and civil discussion with only one round of voting, Giam said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cadres were able to raise their concerns and Singh delivered a statement and answered their questions. \u201cThere was a proper accountability, accounting for the question at hand,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The conference was triggered by a December 2025 letter signed by 25 unhappy cadres, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/pritam-singh-loses-appeal-against-conviction-key-points-from-the-case?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">sparked in part by Singh\u2019s legal troubles.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It had three items on the agenda: for Singh to account to cadres for his behaviour leading up to his court conviction, for him to step down, and for him to face a secret vote on his continued leadership if he did not step down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Asked about the disgruntled cadres, Singh said the matters they<b> <\/b>raised had been dealt with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added: \u201cI\u2019m quite sure they respect the democratic process, as we all do, and the decision was what the cadres decided it ought to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere was a petition, and it was a reflection of how we do things at the party, and I think it\u2019s important for us to speak what\u2019s on our mind, share our values, and that\u2019s what the party did.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Leading up to the vote, the unhappy faction had been searching for a challenger to Singh, amid uncertainty over former chief Low Thia Khiang\u2019s continued support for his successor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Early on June 28, Low laid these rumours to rest, telling the media that he continues to support Singh, as he made his way to the meetings, which started at noon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The special cadres conference was followed by the party\u2019s usual biennial internal elections at 3pm. There, WP chair Sylvia Lim was returned as well to a position she has held since 2003.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The party also elected 12 other members of its top decision-making body \u2013 its central executive committee (CEC). Most were re-elected from the previous CEC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Four of the 12 are not sitting MPs \u2013 Low, former Aljunied GRC MP Faisal Manap, long-time CEC member Tan Kong Soon and the sole new addition, senior counsel Harpreet Singh. He ran as part of the WP\u2019s Punggol GRC team at the last general election in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The party can still co-opt another seven members to its CEC and typically does this about a month after the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a social media post following the election, Harpreet Singh said WP cadres did not act with \u201cblind loyalty\u201d in re-electing Pritam Singh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Instead, they made a careful assessment based on his track record, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe have all seen that through his tireless service, his calm under sustained political pressure, and his steady, measured leadership that has brought the party to significant milestones in Singapore\u2019s parliamentary history,\u201d he said on LinkedIn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The vote was to decide whether Pritam Singh remained fit to lead the party after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/high-court-upholds-wp-chief-pritam-singhs-conviction?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">the High Court upheld his conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee,<\/span><\/a> he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cNone of this is meant to dismiss the court decision \u2013 the judgment stands and must be respected,\u201d Harpreet Singh said. \u201cBut a person\u2019s full history matters when assessing character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The meetings came two months after Pritam Singh received a formal letter of reprimand from the CEC over his conviction for lying in Parliament about his handling of Khan\u2019s matter.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Pritam\u2019s re-election as secretary-general means for WP\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HnwWxxr1PfM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The CEC was responding to the findings from a disciplinary panel comprising Sengkang GRC MPs Jamus Lim and He Ting Ru, and former Hougang MP Png Eng Huat. The panel found that Singh had contravened two articles of the party\u2019s Constitution in his actions relating to Khan\u2019s lies to Parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singh was found by Parliament\u2019s Committee of Privileges and the courts to have guided Khan in maintaining her lie for several months. He appealed against his court conviction, but it was upheld by the High Court in December 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He was later pronounced unsuitable as Leader of the Opposition (LO) by Parliament in January 2026, and was removed from the position by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong shortly after.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong had invited the WP to nominate another MP for the post, but the party declined to do so, maintaining that the role should be filled by the leader of the largest opposition party in Parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Asked about the LO position after his party\u2019s election, Singh said: \u201cThere\u2019s no change&#8230; The operation of our political system is such that it\u2019s the Prime Minister who makes the decision, and I believe he\u2019s already made his decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pritam Singh survives WP leadership vote at cadres meeting\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fns69B4Papk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Institute of Policy Studies senior research fellow Gillian Koh said the \u201csmooth outcome\u201d was expected after Low expressed his support for Singh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Independent political observer Felix Tan said the result means most cadres want to \u201cput a close and a full stop\u201d to the issue, and bring the focus back to Parliament and policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The outcome also sends the message that cadres do not feel there is a better alternative within the party, and that they want stability, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mustafa Izzuddin, a senior international affairs analyst at Solaris Strategies Singapore, said: \u201cIt appears that the call for a special cadres conference was made by a vocal minority, rather than a silent majority who are supportive of Pritam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singh\u2019s electoral record was also a factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt was on his watch that WP attained the largest number of seats in Parliament after the formation of group representation constituencies in 1988, and gave rise to the notion that only if WP competes, those contested electoral seats will see an intense fight with the ruling party,\u201d Mustafa said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singh had at the May 2025 General Election led the WP to its largest-ever parliamentary contingent, with 10 MPs and 2 Non-Constituency MPs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The party has set out to demonstrate that it has its own processes of accountability, Koh noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWith the 12 men and women in blue in Parliament, it will be time for WP to close this chapter and build on the momentum on the ground to strengthen the opposition movement in Singapore.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Nydia Ngiow, managing director at strategic advisory firm BowerGroupAsia Singapore, said\u00a0the WP\u2019s role as a check on the Government is better served by a settled leadership than protracted unhappiness over an issue from several years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She noted that the more interesting signal was from WP chair Lim, touching on how Lim had held the position for 23 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cHer comments pointing towards an eventual transition suggest that WP is starting to think seriously about the next chapter of its leadership as it celebrates its 70th anniversary next year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[LIVE] Pritam Singh re-elected as WP secretary-general, won super-majority of votes in secret ballot\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h0KGvydP-2s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
