{"id":64590,"date":"2026-06-29T05:46:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T21:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64590"},"modified":"2026-06-29T05:46:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T21:46:11","slug":"can-swimming-in-the-singapore-river-make-a-return-3-ways-to-build-identity-in-the-city-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64590","title":{"rendered":"Can swimming in the Singapore River make a return? 3 ways to build identity in the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SINGAPORE \u2013 In front of The Fullerton Hotel, five boys are either about to jump or already mid-plunge into the Singapore River \u2013 the city\u2019s historical lifeblood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They are part of a bronze sculpture named The First Generation that captures a slice of the river\u2019s history and the communities that grew up around it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe sight and sound of boys, swinging from the trees that lined the river and jumping with gusto, breathed charm into the area,\u201d says a sign that describes the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The historical communities whose lives were intertwined with the river are now gone. But at the World Cities Summit that Singapore hosted in mid-June, it was clear that such connections \u2013 bonds between people, and between communities and places \u2013 are what city leaders aspire to forge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Here are three ideas for how the country can foster a greater sense of belonging \u2013 including bringing swimming back to the Singapore River \u2013 gleaned from plenaries during the summit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Public swimming in the Singapore River<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At the closing plenary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/sport\/paris-mayor-swims-in-seine-to-show-it-s-safe-for-olympic-races\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:former Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The words of Hidalgo \u2013 who herself took a dip in the Seine in 2024 \u2013 harkens back to 1984, when Singapore was in the Green Community Centre organised the first mass swim across it \u201cto promote the river as a pleasant place for a cool dip and aquatic sports\u201d, reported The Straits Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt is no longer the old stinking river, the organisers would like Singaporeans to know,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These days \u2013 especially since the river became part of Marina Reservoir \u2013 swimming has largely been disallowed there, except for events such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/sport\/singapore-to-be-part-of-t100-triathlon-world-tour-till-2028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:local leg of the T100 Triathlon World Tour;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" return to the Singapore River \u2013 the maritime nation\u2019s first port \u2013 as a fresh way for Singaporeans to experience and grow a deeper connection to the (Mer)Lion City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Zoltan Ero, chief architect of Budapest Municipality, said his city\u2019s efforts to make the Danube River more accessible to the public \u2013 including by opening pop-up public baths \u2013 \u201chave changed the relationship between the city and its river, and between citizens and their city\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative people fall in love with the city again, has a ready-made solution in its heart. Are Singaporeans ready to take the plunge?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Leaning into Singapore\u2019s port city identity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Another panel at the summit examined how former ports have been rejuvenated, and how today\u2019s ports are changing to meet future needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Singapore finds itself tackling both issues. Terminals in the city \u2013 at Tanjong Pagar, Keppel and Pulau Brani \u2013 are slated to close in the next two decades, as are Pasir Panjang Terminals and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/ura-taps-private-sector-architects-planners-for-ideas-to-redevelop-sembawang-shipyard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Sembawang Shipyard;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Sembawang Shipyard&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Sembawang Shipyard<\/a>. Singapore with an unprecedented opportunity to develop new towns and attractions anchored firmly in the country\u2019s maritime heritage.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div country\u2019s maritime history is not new \u2013 Singapore has kept physical reminders of its early trading days by conserving buildings in areas such as Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Clifford Pier \u2013 the ports and shipyard are different from what has been kept thus far in terms of scale and type of infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Looking ahead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/recreational-ideas-wanted-for-sembawang-shipyard-former-jurong-bird-park-ura\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:previous exhibitions by the URA;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" what could come in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Rotterdam, for instance, director of public works Joop Polfliet said his city has blended heritage and modern architecture in Rijnhaven, an old harbour area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There, an inner-city beach is being built as part of greening efforts, while old warehouses have been converted to restaurants, museums and theatres \u2013 one warehouse has even had new apartments built on top of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, on the Scheldt Quays in Antwerp, 15 large harbour cranes sit by the river, allowing the public to learn about the infrastructure used in ports, and see how they have changed with time.<\/p>\n<figure md:leading-8 break-words\">There are signs that Singaporeans, too, will get to do this in time to come, with harbour cranes repeatedly showing up in renders from a masterplan for the future of Pulau Brani and Sentosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Like these port cities, the impending redevelopment of the city ports and Sembawang Shipyard are a chance for planners to reinforce Singapore\u2019s identity as a maritime nation, and infuse this sense of connectedness to the sea into the everyday lives of Singaporeans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Designing for density<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As cities become denser, there is also less room for community space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One solution to this space crunch that has been widely adopted worldwide are highrise mixed-use buildings that allow multiple functions \u2013 homes, malls and offices space-saving tool, such density is a double-edged sword that could have profound impacts on a city\u2019s social fabric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">From one perspective, density brings people together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Heng Chye Kiang, provost\u2019s professor at the National University of Singapore\u2019s College of Design and Engineering, said at the summit that human relationships are strongly influenced by frequency of encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said that in dense cities, people are likely to interact with each other more frequently, which helps to build social ties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But building too densely also has the reverse effect \u2013 people would rather retreat to the comfort of their own homes, which increases the phenomenon of social isolation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What then, is the right balance?
