Although he had already established himself as an auteur with innovative late-1990s crime thrillers such as <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">The Mission<\/em><\/span> (1999), <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Running on Karma<\/em> was entirely different.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">\u201cMystery, murder, humour, action, special effects, plus Buddhism and <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Andy Lau [Tak-wah]<\/span> in a muscular body suit \u2013 <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Running on Karma<\/em> is nothing if not ambitious,\u201d noted critic Paul Fonoroff in his review in the South China Morning Post.<\/div>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">Comedy in disguise?<\/h3>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">To\u2019s nifty 2001 comedy <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Love on a Diet<\/em><\/span> featured matinee idol Lau playing against type in a \u201cfat suit\u201d \u2013 a prosthetic costume making him appear severely overweight.
