{"id":64448,"date":"2026-06-28T16:02:49","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64448"},"modified":"2026-06-28T16:02:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:02:49","slug":"motherhood-journey-after-miscarriage-having-a-large-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64448","title":{"rendered":"Motherhood journey after miscarriage: Having a large family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> For most of her life, Kelly Ang was terrified of children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey seemed very unpredictable and I didn\u2019t know how to interact with them,\u201d said the 38-year-old freelance writer. \u201cIt felt like a lot of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When she got married 15 years ago, she thought she would have one or two children, or perhaps three at most.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She is now expecting her sixth child, due in July. She and her husband, a 42-year-old teacher, have five children aged between three and 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Her path to motherhood has been marked by joy and heartbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After her first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, she experienced a \u201cseismic shift\u201d in how she saw motherhood, realising that children could not be taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Along the way, she has had five miscarriages, including the loss of a baby at 20 weeks\u2019 gestation in 2025. She says she still mourns each child she lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ang\u2019s family is Catholic. \u201cEvery life is precious and we are living beyond ourselves,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWith every child we add to our family, the quality of life increases with joy, meaning and all the intangible stuff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI feel my kids are not losing out by having more siblings<!-- -->, and each time I\u2019m pregnant, they are very excited<!-- -->.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In an era when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/single-child-families-on-the-rise-in-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> most Singaporeans stop at having one or two children,<\/span><\/a> a small group of parents, like Ang, are having larger families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The share of babies who were the fifth or subsequent child in their families accounted for 2.1 per cent of all babies born in 2025, up from 1.5 per cent in 2005. In 2015, the figure was 1.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2025, 614 such babies were born, up from 558 in 2005 and 587 in 2015, based on data from the Department of Statistics website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Having a large family has required sacrifices. It took Ang a few years to come to terms with the loss of her professional identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI felt very judged. My boss asked me why I threw away my career, and I was worried about what others would think of me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But since then, her focus has changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Where she once measured success through academic and career achievements, she now finds fulfilment in her children\u2019s growth and in living a life centred on her family and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Still, the practical realities of raising five children with one main breadwinner can be demanding. Groceries for her family can cost between $2,500 and $4,000 a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The couple\u2019s combined income is a low five-figure sum, which they declined to reveal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To manage their budget, they eat at home Mondays to Saturdays, and restaurant meals are reserved for special occasions. Tobias, 11, is the \u201clife of the party\u201d, while eight-year-old Isabella is \u201cbig-hearted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lily Beth, five, is shy and reserved, while Christabel, three, is everyone\u2019s favourite as she is at that \u201ccute age\u201d, Ang said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She says motherhood has taught her to be more patient and giving. \u201cI feel that my life has a lot of meaning<!-- -->. Each kid has also taught me a lot<!-- -->,\u201d she said. \u201cNow, I feel I have a bigger perspective and a bigger capacity to understand and hold space for people. I like myself more now than before I became a mum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As the eldest, Gabriel feels a strong sense of responsibility for his siblings. He added that they \u201cbrighten up the house in their own<!-- --> way\u201d<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Tobias, the second eldest, said the best part about a large family is never being short of someone to play with.
