{"id":64389,"date":"2026-06-28T10:33:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T02:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64389"},"modified":"2026-06-28T10:33:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T02:33:16","slug":"malaysia-vows-smooth-borders-for-johor-polls-heres-what-voters-in-singapore-need-to-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=64389","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia vows smooth borders for Johor polls \u2013 here\u2019s what voters in Singapore need to do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><span class=\"dateline\">JOHOR BAHRU<\/span> <!-- -->\u2013<!-- --> Johor goes to the polls on July 11, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/johor-state-election-five-battles-that-will-show-whether-malaysias-political-tide-has-turned?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">upcoming 16th state election<\/span><\/a> seen as an important precursor to national polls in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There will be 56 seats contested in the state legislative assembly (Dewan Undangan Negeri, or DUN, in Malay) of Malaysia\u2019s southern state, with 2.7 million eligible voters in the Johor electorate \u2013 including those who live and work in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">An Election Commission spokesperson confirmed to The Straits Times that Johoreans in Singapore who have not <!-- -->applied for a postal vote by June 19 <!-- -->will need to physically head to their respective polling stations to cast their votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But not to worry, as Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told reporters on June 27 that the priority is to ensure that there are no traffic or checkpoint disruptions on July 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said his ministry and the Malaysian Immigration Department have been instructed to be prepared in the event of a system disruption at the checkpoints that would lead to congestion. He also acknowledged the potential inconvenience for Johoreans working in Singapore who plan to return that weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe are putting every safeguard in place to avoid problems on July 11. But we are not taking any chances. We have Plan A and Plan B ready to go. That is the directive I have given to the ministry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Here\u2019s what eligible Malaysian voters need to know ahead of Polling Day on July 11:<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Your physical MyKad. If you cannot locate your blue identification card, your Malaysian passport or driving licence can also be used for identification purposes at the polling centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Eligible voters 18 years old and above should check the official Election Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/mysprsemak.spr.gov.my\/semakan\/daftarPemilih\/?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">website here<\/span><\/a> for their voting status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">By keying in their MyKad number, Malaysians can access their assigned polling station, the district they are voting in as well as the Parliament seat it belongs to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Eligible voters will also be allocated an \u201cencouraged voting time slot\u201d. Polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Voters should be aware of the candidates and their parties contesting to represent them in their respective state legislative assembly seats (DUN).
