The Singapore Ministry of Education has allowed school bus operators to add a temporary fuel surcharge of up to 20 per cent \u2014 for July and August 2026 \u2014 on existing bus fares, said the MoE on Friday. The measure comes as fuel prices continue to bite because of the Middle East conflict, and bus operations need to remain viable.<\/p>\n
\u201cOperators are discussing any fare adjustments with schools and communicating these to parents during the June school holidays, so that parents can plan their transport arrangements when the school term starts,\u201d said the ministry, as per a CNA<\/a> report.<\/p>\n The CNA report cited previous Singapore Government measures to give some support to school bus operators, as the Iran war began on February 28 and showed no signs of coming to an end in March-April-May. The schools were closed for summer in June.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n As a result of the prolonged conflict, fuel shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was badly impacted, making prices shoot up around the world. Singapore, too, has been affected.<\/p>\n \u201cIn May, the [government] support was increased from the equivalent of 13 per cent to 20 per cent of transport fare revenue,\u201d said CNA.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The fare hike in July-August 2026 is not unexpected, as the MoE had said last month that school bus operators would be allowed to add a \u201ctime-bound\u201d fuel surcharge to offset the high fuel prices.<\/p>\n CNA said that the ministry had then advised schools to \u201creasonably consider\u201d school bus operators\u2019 requests to hike fares.<\/p>\n However, some of the fare burden would still be borne by the Singapore Government \u2014 it will give extra school bus subsidy to families of those students who receive MoE financial assistance scheme.<\/p>\n As for students who do not receive or qualify for MoE assistance, their families need to reach out to the specific schools for assistance to deal with the 20 per cent surcharge.<\/p>\n CNA said that it contacted the Singapore School and Private Hire Bus Owners\u2019 Association, which said that \u201cthe measure announced by MOE is timely and will help alleviate part of the financial pressure faced by school bus operators\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cMany operators are mindful of the financial burden on parents and may choose not to impose the full surcharge, or any surcharge at all, despite the significant increase in operating costs,\u201d said the Association. <\/p>\n Fuel prices remain high and a huge burden for many governments because, despite the recently agreed upon America-Iran ceasefire, peace in the Middle East remains tenuous, and the Strait of Hormuz is not fully open yet.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n The Singapore Government will give extra school bus subsidy, if need be, to families of those students who receive MoE financial assistance scheme.
