{"id":63955,"date":"2026-06-26T18:01:02","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=63955"},"modified":"2026-06-26T18:01:02","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:01:02","slug":"chinese-receipt-at-vivocity-eatery-sparks-confusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=63955","title":{"rendered":"Chinese receipt at VivoCity eatery sparks confusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A customer who dined at a restaurant serving Chinese cuisine at VivoCity said he was unexpectedly spoken to in Mandarin and given a receipt printed entirely in Chinese, leaving him struggling to communicate with staff members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Azri, the 24-year-old diner, said he visited the restaurant at around 2pm on June 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cFirst of all, the server cannot speak English,\u201d he <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@axzr.i\/video\/7655218397591915783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says in a TikTok video posted on the same day<\/a>, adding that he had to ask for a cup of water using the limited Mandarin he knew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He then pans the camera to the bill he was given, showing his order written entirely in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cYou tell me, I want to read what?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"my-lg md:my-xl\">\n<p><hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 lg:hidden\"\/><span class=\"text-grayscale-400 text-14 leading-16 font-primary text-center lg:text-left p-sm\">Scroll to continue reading<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 my-md\"\/>\n<hr class=\"my-md border-grayscale-100\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Would patronise the restaurant again<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Speaking to Stomp, Azri said there was a language barrier between him and the staff member.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He explained that he is not fluent in Mandarin and understands just enough to pick up contextual clues, after learning a few common phrases through work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cIt was funny to me as the receipt given to me was in Chinese, I just assumed that it would be in English as we are in a country where the common language is English,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">It was his first time visiting the outlet and he had not encountered similar situations before, prompting his amused reaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Despite the encounter, he said he was \u201cthankful\u201d that he was able to communicate with the waitress, even with his limited understanding of the language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cI would go again to the eatery 100%,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Stomp has reached out to the restaurant for comment.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"bg-primary-100 h-px border-0 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"\/>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-xl rounded-xl border border-primary-100 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/assets\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
