— A grandmother’s defence of her grandson eating at an Ikea showroom dining table in Singapore has sparked a surprisingly heated online debate across the republic.

The incident unfolded at Ikea Tampines after photos surfaced online showing a young boy tucking into a meal while seated at one of the retailer’s showroom dining sets.

According to the Facebook user who shared the images on the Complaint Singapore page, the photos were taken at around 11.20am on June 21.

The poster claimed they told the elderly woman that eating in the showroom was not allowed, only to be met with a dismissive response.

“It’s just a kid,” the grandmother allegedly replied.

That four-word response may have done more damage than the snack itself.

Before long, social media users piled into the comments, with many arguing that the issue was less about the child and more about respect for shared public spaces.

“Ikea is a good place to witness people at their worst behaviour, especially during weekends,” one commenter wrote, blaming unruly shoppers and children for turning the Swedish furniture giant into an obstacle course.

Others complained about people treating showroom displays like private living rooms, with one netizen saying every display set seemed to have someone “choping” the space.

Several urged shoppers to alert Ikea staff rather than confront fellow customers directly.

The viral post eventually caught Ikea’s attention.

Responding to media organisation AsiaOne’s queries, the furniture retailer said customers are encouraged to make themselves feel at home while exploring its room settings — but not quite that at home.

“To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable shopping experience for everyone”, Ikea said customers should enjoy their food in designated dining areas such as its restaurant.

The company added that eating in showroom spaces could create hygiene and food safety concerns while also disrupting the shopping experience for others.

Ikea added that its staff are available to guide customers whenever necessary.

<a
