Screenshot courtesy: Instagram\/ministryofmanpower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hundreds of stranded migrant workers in Singapore, most of them from India and Bangladesh, are being supported by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MoM), following their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connectedtoindia.com\/indian-bangladeshi-workers-in-singapore-appeal-to-manpower-ministry-over-unpaid-wages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">group appeal to the ministry<\/a> over months of unpaid wages.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore Minister of State at the Ministry of Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday, showing migrant workers being counselled and being given grocery items to see them through these difficult times.<\/p>\n<p>About 100 migrant workers from the Indian subcontinent had turned up at the MoM office on Monday to seek help. Many of them were employed by KPA Engineering, an air-conditioner maintenance services company, that stopped paying wages and gave the workers no assurance of future payments. This was followed another appeal on Tuesday from another group of 100-odd workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>And now, MoM has identified more such stranded workers \u2014 about 400 in all, unpaid for 3-4 months \u2014 and decided to give them SGD 200 in cash and vouchers from the Singapore Government, it was announced on Wednesday, as per a PTI report.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his Instagram post on Wednesday, minister Dinesh Vasu Dash wrote: \u201cToday, we met workers from KPA Engineering and SK Industries who have been affected by unpaid salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past two days, TADM (Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management) has helped more than 250 workers lodge salary claims and will facilitate mediation with the employers as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor workers facing housing difficulties, we are relocating them to the MOM Onboarding Centre, where their immediate needs, including meals, will be taken care of. Workers who wish to continue working in Singapore will be issued Special Passes while we help facilitate transfers to new employers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>The minister wrote: \u201cMoM takes this matter seriously. Investigations are ongoing, and we will not hesitate to take firm enforcement action if breaches of our employment laws are established.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Singapore media on Wednesday, the minister said that most of unpaid workers are in the air-conditioning installation or construction sectors with sufficient job demand.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DZ94ME9TXJl\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NTUC works to find alternative employment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) Secretary General and labour chief Ng Chee Meng said that the largest labour movement in Singapore and the NGO Migrant Workers\u2019 Centre (MWC) will give each worker SGD 100 in cash and SGD 100 in FairPrice (Supermarket) vouchers to help meet their daily expenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>NTUC has also found 150 construction job vacancies from around 40 employers in the past two days, Ng added.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the media at Tuas View Dormitory, where most of the workers are currently housed, Ng said that the labour movement has also discussed with the Ministry of Manpower the ways to recover the workers\u2019 salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe practice of abandoning the workers and not paying salaries is not something that NTUC will stand without acting upon,\u201d Channel News Asia quoted Ng as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>On Wednesday, during his visit to the workers\u2019 dormitory, Ng said, \u201cI understand they still owe agency fees, and some of them are in debt.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ng spoke to around 200 affected workers with the help of Tamil and Bengali interpreters on Wednesday. When asked, most workers said that three months\u2019 salary was pending while some mentioned four months\u2019 worth.
