Martin\u2019s Game of Thrones<\/em> is a highly successful property comprising books, multiple television shows (including House of the Dragon<\/em>, now entering its third season), video games, and more. Fans might easily spend dozens of hours engaging with what\u2019s already there, but for some of us, that\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Gamers have the option of trying Game of Thrones<\/em> video game adaptations, but the selection is limited. Then they\u2019re left to look elsewhere for more adventures in foreboding realms like Westeros. Fortunately, numerous options await. Here are five games to try the next time you want fantasy gameplay with high stakes and dark vibes.<\/p>\n

Geralt of Rivia, a wandering hero of sorts created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, inhabits a dark fantasy world stuffed full of sorcerers, elves, dwarves, and other Tolkienesque fare. Romance and betrayal are never far away, and the player has agency to steer the narrative in morally gray directions. The stories promise hope for a brighter future, generally steering clear of the darker course plotted by Game of Thrones<\/em>. Still, the opening moments find Geralt beheading a griffin. That\u2019s not exactly peace and harmony.<\/p>\n

If you choose to dive into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/em>, prepare yourself for dozens of hours of adventure. The game has two expansions that run longer than some entire games offered by the competition. And this May, developer CD Projekt promised \u201ca proper big expansion,\u201d 11 years after the title\u2019s debut on consoles and PC. There\u2019s something in the water, clearly, and it might just want to end you.<\/p>\n

Game of Thrones<\/em> offers more than a fantasy kingdom in the thralls of winter, but bitter cold is unquestionably part of its formula. The Banner Saga<\/em>, developed by Stoic Games, is the first installment in a trilogy that explores classic Norse mythology while telling the story of a caravan in an icy wilderness.<\/p>\n

Players explore two separate paths through a bitter wasteland, ultimately joining forces to survive fearsome adversaries called the Dredge. Choices have consequences, because the game was developed with an important philosophy in mind: \u201cIf there’s nothing at stake there’s nothing to invest in.\u201d Not everyone will survive to see the credits roll. Who lives and who dies is largely up to the player, as well as the whims of a dangerous environment brought to life with deceptively vibrant visuals. A winter sun promises pain every bit as readily as overcast skies.<\/p>\n

George R. R. Martin hears often from fans upset he hasn\u2019t finished writing his main series, but some of his side projects are cool enough to inspire forgiveness. Take Elden Ring<\/em>, for example.<\/p>\n

Building on lore developed by Martin, Elden Ring<\/em> features a grim world with heroes, darkness, betrayal, and renewal on an epic scale. Hidetaka Miyazaki, best known for Dark Souls<\/em>, directs a game that features challenging combat and a fantastic kingdom on the brink of annihilation. Its open world gives players one reason after another to keep going, even when progression becomes maddeningly difficult.<\/p>\n

Developer FromSoftware also released an expansion, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree<\/em>, providing a next-level challenge with a meaty side story that ensures fans of the base game can spend even more time diving through Martin\u2019s unique lore.<\/p>\n

\n Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (2025)

As a fantasy epic, Game of Thrones<\/em> features magical creatures, like dragons. It gets the most mileage from the interactions between people, however, something it has in common with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Developed by Warhorse Studios, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2<\/em> introduces an ordinary man named Henry of Skalitz who lives in Bohemia during the 15th century. The nation struggles in the grip of a civil war, one that pushes Henry through a medieval world full of intrigue, betrayal, kings, and paupers. It benefits from many of the same ingredients that make Westeros so compelling, offering tales of adventure without the romanticized settings that make the stakes in some other RPGs ring hollow. History was messy and, playing as Henry, you will be too.<\/p>\n

\n Dragon Age: Origins (2009)

Like the other titles on this list, Dragon Age: Origins<\/em> explores dark fantasy with a side of heroic behavior. It served as a spiritual successor to Baldur\u2019s Gate<\/em> and Neverwinter Nights<\/em>, which developer BioWare worked on previously.<\/p>\n

Dragon Age: Origins<\/em> features a lengthy single-player campaign focused on \u201cThe Warden,\u201d who wanders an often oppressive environment alongside memorable companions. The story develops based on the race and character class the player selects, but betrayal and heroism are always part of the mix. Players found the package compelling enough to buy millions of copies, leading to a number of sequels that continue the story (including Dragon Age: The Veilguard<\/em> in 2024, which focused on friend groups).<\/p>\n

Fantasy might be bright and cheerful, grim and dark, or somewhere in between. You can engage with the tone and content that interest you, even after the Game of Thrones<\/em> well runs dry. If your idea of a good time is dreary and dire, start with one of the games listed above and see what develops. You may just feel like you\u2019re back home in Westeros.<\/p>\n
