{"id":62601,"date":"2026-06-21T23:27:01","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T15:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=62601"},"modified":"2026-06-21T23:27:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T15:27:01","slug":"370-domestic-helpers-trained-in-caregiving-pilot-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=62601","title":{"rendered":"370 domestic helpers trained in caregiving pilot programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; <!-- -->Having cared for the same employer for 14 years, domestic helper Priyanti quickly noticed something was not right with the 84-year-old woman over a year ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The elderly lady, whom Priyanti calls <i>ah ma<\/i>, would forget items she had bought at the market and want to purchase them again. Her moods also started changing without warning \u2013 all of which were <!-- -->possibly<!-- --> signs of dementia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Subsequently, <i>ah ma<\/i> suffered a stroke and lost her mobility, leaving Priyanti even more worried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI (was) really scared because I didn\u2019t know what to do,\u201d said the 38-year-old, who is from Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After hearing about a dementia care course organised by the Centre for Domestic Employees (CDE) <!-- -->via social media<!-- -->, Priyanti signed up. She completed the course in July 2025 and learnt how to better communicate with her employer, such as by listening to her and calming her down when she is upset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Priyanti is one of over 370 domestic helpers who have been trained over the past year under one of four caregiving pilot programmes run by CDE, an initiative of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The other three programmes cover caring for the elderly, infants and children, as well as caregivers\u2019 first aid and emergency response skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For Priyanti, her bond with <i>ah ma<\/i> also grew after she understood the latter\u2019s situation more via the course. The elderly woman\u2019s memory of family members is fading, but she still remembers her helper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI really don\u2019t want to leave her,\u201d the domestic worker told The <!-- -->Straits<!-- --> Times on June 21, at CDE\u2019s 10th anniversary celebrations at Resorts World Sentosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Michael Lim, director of NTUC\u2019s Migrant Workers Segment, said the pilot programmes started after hearing feedback from migrant domestic workers about challenges they faced at work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some of these surfaced during the mandatory interviews CDE conducts with all first-time domestic helpers on behalf of the Ministry of Manpower, to check on their well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">CDE worked with other organisations to conduct the caregiving pilot programmes, which came with a $10 registration fee for domestic workers. Content was kept bite-sized and native language speakers were invited to aid their understanding, said Lim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe confidence of our sisters (domestic workers) has grown tremendously.
