Growing up, I attended a church where it was the principal language spoken. Decades later, I can still recite the entire Lord\u2019s Prayer in Teochew, a feat that still surprises me.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Teochew people are often associated with entrepreneurial success, <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">distinctive cuisine<\/span> and a far-flung overseas diaspora. Yet behind these familiar images lies a rich history stretching back thousands of years.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The Teochew homeland, which is known in Mandarin Chinese as <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Chaoshan<\/span>, encompasses the modern cities of Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang on the eastern coast of Guangdong province.
