At a time when many companies are tightening belts, restructuring teams and trying to figure out what AI means for the future of work, Gain City is making a very different kind of move.<\/p>\n
The homegrown retailer is preparing to open its new Gain City Megastore @ Tampines in Q3 2026, and it is backing that expansion with more than 300 job opportunities for Singapore residents.<\/p>\n
Gain City has partnered with the North East Community Development Council and Lifelong Learning Singapore to hold a dedicated community recruitment drive on 18 June 2026, as part of the Jobs Nearby @ CDC initiative. It marks the first dedicated walk-in interview organised under the initiative with Gain City, and the point is straightforward: bring jobs closer to residents, and connect hiring managers directly with people looking for work.<\/p>\n
That might sound like a standard recruitment line, but the timing makes it more interesting.<\/p>\n

Across Singapore and the wider world, companies are still navigating higher costs, inflationary pressure, supply chain disruption and rapid changes brought on by automation and AI<\/b>. Some firms are reorganising. Some are cutting jobs. Some are moving roles or operations elsewhere in search of leaner cost structures.<\/p>\n
Gain City is choosing another route. Instead of scaling back locally, it is expanding its Singapore footprint and hiring across the very functions that keep a retail and services business running, including those in:<\/p>\n

Founded in 1981, Gain City has grown from what the release calls \u201chumble kampong beginnings\u201d into one of Singapore\u2019s better-known names in consumer electronics, air-conditioning and electrical solutions. Over four decades, it moved with Singapore\u2019s own economic transformation, from a small local business into a retailer serving generations of households.<\/p>\n
Today, Gain City operates across 18 locations in Singapore<\/b>, supported by almost 1,000 employees and an in-house fleet of more than 200 service vehicles. That last bit matters because this is not just a shopfront business. Behind every air-conditioner sale, fridge delivery, or home appliance purchase is a fairly serious service machine involving technicians, drivers, warehouse teams, installers, support staff and customer-facing teams.<\/p>\n
The upcoming Tampines Megastore builds on Gain City\u2019s megastore format, which many shoppers would associate with its Sungei Kadut outlet<\/b>. The Sungei Kadut Megastore has long been a one-stop destination for consumer electronics, IT, furniture, air-conditioning products, and home renovation needs. The Tampines outlet now brings that big-format retail idea to the east, closer to residents in one of Singapore\u2019s most established heartland regions.<\/p>\n
For North East residents, the pitch is not only convenience as shoppers. It is also access to work nearer home.<\/p>\n
Available positions span retail sales associates and managers, outdoor sales executives, cashiers, sous chefs, cooks, service crew, technicians, installers, project managers, project sales managers, warehouse executives and managers, facilities engineers and managers, B2B sales coordinators, Class 3 and Class 4 drivers, systems engineers, customer service executives, finance and accounting executives or leads, and human resources executives or senior executives.<\/p>\n
In other words, this is not one of those hiring pushes where every job sounds like the same frontline role with a different title. The spread is fairly broad, covering skilled trades, service work, logistics, operations and office functions.<\/p>\n

That mix also says something about how Gain City sees physical retail in 2026. Retail is no longer just about putting products on shelves and waiting for shoppers to walk in.<\/p>\n
Gain City says it continues to use technology and innovation to improve efficiency, customer engagement and the overall shopping experience. But the company is also careful not to pitch this as technology replacing people. Its message is closer to this: the business is modernising, but it still needs trained local teams to deliver the service customers expect.<\/p>\n
That is probably where this recruitment drive lands best. It is not just a \u201cwe are hiring\u201d notice. It is a small but useful counterpoint to the wider mood around workplace disruption. AI and automation may be changing how companies operate, but businesses still need people who can sell, install, repair, deliver, manage, advise and solve real customer problems.<\/p>\n

The community element is also central to the announcement. Jobs Nearby @ CDC is designed to make employment support more local and personalised, with job ambassadors helping residents find roles close to home and connecting them with employers that are hiring. For jobseekers who may not want to scroll through endless listings or send applications into a void, a walk-in interview gives the process a more direct, human feel.<\/p>\n
Eileen Chin, a Job Ambassador, said the initiative aims to connect residents with more job opportunities close to home, while supporting employers such as Gain City in finding suitable candidates. She added that she hopes the walk-in interview will make a real difference for North East residents seeking stable and rewarding careers, while helping Gain City build the local team it needs to serve the community well.<\/p>\n

That \u201c45 years\u201d line is doing a bit of quiet work here. Gain City is not presenting the Tampines Megastore as a one-off expansion. It is framing it as the next step in a long-running Singapore story.<\/p>\n
