--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1080\/1080;\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-735450\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: @rachelwan.art on Instagram<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe way you speak to me is very different from the way you speak to each other,\u201d she clarified.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shared one particularly difficult example for her to <em>MS News<\/em> \u2014 pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>When addressing oneself in Malay, you have the choice between \u2018saya\u2019 and \u2018aku\u2019. One is more formal and the other is often used when with friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater I learnt that it\u2019s better for a non-Malay to use \u201csaya\u201d unless another native Malay speaker considers you to be a part of their friend group,\u201d Rachel explained.<\/p>\n<p>While learning the language has been daunting, Rachel finds joy in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all very, very confusing.
