{"id":60568,"date":"2026-06-14T06:19:03","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T22:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=60568"},"modified":"2026-06-14T06:19:03","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T22:19:03","slug":"peer-support-network-for-domestic-workers-grows-as-mental-health-stigma-persists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=60568","title":{"rendered":"Peer support network for domestic workers grows as mental health stigma persists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Despite being hit by her employer and left with bruises, a <!-- -->distressed<!-- --> domestic worker did not dare alert the authorities and <!-- -->only confided<!-- --> in a fellow Filipino helper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Though Catherine Gonzaga Suarez could not persuade the battered helper to seek formal help, she checked on her emotional state till the latter was sent home two weeks later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Suarez encountered the case this year while volunteering with the Care Sisters, a peer support network that reaches out to migrant domestic workers to provide mental well-being support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She is one of about 1,000 members, up from about 180 helpers in 2022. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) partners with the Alliance of Domestic Employees Outreach (ADEO) to manage the programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While the network has grown, years of collective outreach in Singapore have yet to overcome the mental health stigma \u2013 particularly fear of losing their jobs \u2013 that continues to deter many domestic workers from seeking formal help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Suarez told The Straits Times that some helpers fear calling MOM, but readily open up to the volunteers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey don\u2019t hesitate to call because we\u2019re the same. But workers are still not coming forward enough,\u201d said Lim<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One possible reason is the stigma attached to mental health issues, especially fears that employers would fire them, said ADEO\u2019s team lead Joyder Ng.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/community\/migrant-workers-hesitate-to-seek-mental-health-support-due-to-job-loss-fear-misconceptions-study?ref=latest&amp;ref=inline-article\" started as<!-- --> <!-- -->the ministry recognised that many domestic workers \u201cmay prefer seeking support through informal networks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The motley crew of Filipino, Indonesian, Burmese and Indian domestic workers befriend helpers at gathering points such as Paya Lebar and Fort Canning about <!-- -->two Sundays a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Through casual questions such as \u201cAre you happy with work?\u201d and \u201cHow\u2019s your family?\u201d, they try to spot those who may be struggling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cEven though they smile, I can see if they\u2019re really happy or unhappy,\u201d said Eni Wijayanti, an Indonesian helper who joined the Care Sisters in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The<!-- --> <!-- -->volunteers<!-- --> <!-- -->lend a listening ear and direct<!-- --> <!-- -->fellow helpers to further support, such as the CDE\u2019s 24-hour helpline, or MOM\u2019s WhatsApp channel, which has information on topics such as<!-- --> <!-- -->employment rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">MOM and ADEO<!-- --> <!-- -->are also training the Care Sisters in psychological Quarrels were constant due to communication issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The stress left her in tears daily. Not wanting to worry her family, she kept the struggles to herself and found solace only in going to a nearby church to pray.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One day in 2013, she ran to a police station to seek help. \u201cI very desperately needed to talk to someone. It also offered free counselling to 320 of its shelter residents in 2025, up from 187 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Brahm Centre provides free counselling to about 10 helpers every month, sometimes by phone or text messages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its CEO Angie Chew said: \u201cIf (they\u2019re) in distress, you can\u2019t say, \u2018Okay, you come on Sunday.\u2019 You have to act upon it as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the last <!-- -->1\u00bd<!-- --> years, Silver Ribbon (Singapore) has received about 10 referrals for free counselling from CDE, as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/migrant-rights-group-home-celebrates-20-years-international-migrants-day?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">their 2024 agreement to boost mental health support for domestic workers<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Employers do not need to be informed, and sessions can be arranged via video or phone calls at night or on their off days, said Silver Ribbon (Singapore) executive director Porsche Poh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Encouragingly, some employers sought advice on supporting their helpers or accompanied them to counselling sessions, said Poh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But she noted there are limits to what self-care tips can achieve.
