But for every influential banger like <em>Super Mario World<\/em> or <em>Metal Gear Solid<\/em>, there\u2019s a hidden gem that never quite got the moment in the sun it deserved. This Zelda-like action RPG was developed by <em>Punch-Out!!<\/em> creator Genyo Takeda and released exclusively in Europe and North America. It was one of the earliest RPGs to ditch the swords and sorcery setting, instead leaning into \u201890s Americana with references to aliens, baseball, yo-yos, and soda pop. <em>Star Tropics <\/em>has become infamous for its hard-to-reach hidden rooms that often lead to more secret areas. If you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll find a great item. If not? Instant death. With a captivating story, memorable locations, and thoughtfully designed puzzles, <em>The Fate of Atlantis<\/em> makes you feel like a clever archaeologist who always manages to stay one step ahead of the Nazis. Early on, you\u2019ll choose from one of three unique paths through the game, depending on your preference for puzzles, action, or teamwork. Each route has its own unique puzzles, cutscenes, and locations, which adds a ton of replay value. Before each game, you&#8217;ll select one of four 20th-century time periods, which will determine the aviation technology available as well as historical events that will occur during your playthrough (think oil shortages or the Cold War). Unlike most business sims, this one is best enjoyed as a competitive multiplayer experience \u2014 you can play with up to three other people. The tactical RPG includes a bunch of familiar classes, like knights, mages, and archers. It also includes some one-off weirdos, like a werewolf, a flying squid, a turtle (also inexplicably flying), and a phoenix who bears more than a passing resemblance to <em>Sesame Street<\/em>\u2019s Big Bird. There\u2019s no permadeath here, so it\u2019s not quite as unforgiving as Fire Emblem, but the battle maps are vast and intricate. Adding to the fun is a wealth of secret items, weapons, and recruitable characters to discover. There are dozens of us hoping Sega brings this series back one day. This is essentially <em>Umamusume: Pretty Derby<\/em> without the gacha mechanics or anime girls. Instead, there\u2019s a far greater emphasis on breeding, training, race choice, and selecting the proper jockeys for each horse in your stable. As your horses and jockeys improve over generations, you\u2019ll be able to compete in Japan\u2019s most prestigious graded races \u2014 and eventually the French Grand Prix. It\u2019s not much to look at, but damn is it absorbing.
