You still see the goals. You still hear the commentators. But the truth is something feels missing – the atmosphere never quite hits you. The roar of the crowd feels distant, chants blur together into background noise, and dramatic moments somehow feel flatter than they should. Despite what some people might say, watching football is as much about sound as it is visuals, and once you’ve experienced a good audio setup at home, it is almost impossible to go back to your TV speakers.

But here comes the tricky part. What kind of setup actually makes sense for your home?

Not everyone needs a massive surround sound system with speakers hanging from every corner of the living room. For some of us living in newer HDB flats or smaller condos, there’s simply no space to install a Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 surround sound setup.

So before you rush into buying the biggest soundbar or the loudest speaker system you can find, it’s worth thinking about what kind of setup actually fits your lifestyle, your living room or bedroom and what sort of content you view the most.

What to consider

<default:svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="18" height="9" fill="none" stroke="currentColor"><default:path d="M1 1L9 8L17 1" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round"/></default:svg>

1. Soundbars are probably the sweet spot for most homes

2. Headphones can elevate an audio experience too

3. Don’t overpay for features you’ll never use

4. Consider your living room or room’s layout

Soundbars are probably the sweet spot for most homes

A good soundbar is probably all that you need.

Photo: HWZ

For most people, a soundbar is still the easiest to recommend. For the simple reason that they’re compact, relatively simple to set up, and is an immediate sound upgrade over every built-in TV speaker system. You also don’t need to deal with running speaker cables across the living room or figuring out where rear speakers should go.

More importantly, modern soundbars like the Sonos Arc Ultra have become surprisingly good at handling sports broadcasts.

This is because having clear dialogue is pretty important when it comes to watching football matches. For instance, you want the match commentary to remain sharp without getting drowned out by crowd noise, especially during tense moments or post-match analysis. Many newer soundbars now include dedicated voice enhancement or dialogue clarity modes that specifically boost vocals without making everything else sound unnatural.

If you’re living in a smaller HDB flat, even a modest two-speaker bookshelf speaker setup can make a major difference. Adding a subwoofer helps add a bit more impact to crowd reactions and stadium atmosphere without necessarily needing to crank the volume dangerously high.

Going up to Dolby Atmos systems with rear speakers can certainly sound more immersive, but realistically, not every living room layout benefits equally from it. Such setups require treated rooms to sound their best. Furthermore, Atmos effects work better when your room has enough space for sound to bounce around properly. This explains why sometimes you simply can’t get the same effect that you might have experienced in showrooms.

It’s worth noting that some soundbar do support Dolby Atmos, but by virtue of being just one speaker unit, they are really only an approximation of what a proper 7.1.2 setup might sound like. A traditional setup with an AV receiver and physical speakers offers superior sound separation, more precise spatial accuracy, and true, uncompromised immersion. That said, “not as good” does not mean “bad.”

Headphones can elevate an audio experience too

A really good pair (and expensive) of headphones can rival many soundbars too.

Photo: Sony

Then there are headphones. Not earphones, not earbuds. Headphones.

Earphones and earbuds have come a long way, and most of them sound pretty good and offer great noise isolation. However, there’s still something about the way a good pair of headphones sounds that is hard to beat, and it comes with having large drivers that earphones and earbuds cannot quite replicate.

A good pair of headphones can often deliver clearer and more detailed audio than an equivalently priced soundbar, especially if you’re watching alone at your desk or in bed. And of course, in the living room too. A really good headphone like the Sony WH-1000XM6 (or the just-announced WH-1000XX) allows you to hear crowd chants more distinctly, commentary becomes easier to follow, and you also avoid waking up the rest of the household during matches that are broadcast live at ungodly hours.

Wireless headphones have also become far less annoying to use compared to a few years ago. Battery life is longer, latency issues have improved to the point that they are impossible to notice, and many TVs now support Bluetooth audio directly, too.

That said, there are trade-offs with headphones.

Bluetooth latency can occasionally cause slight lip-sync mismatches depending on your TV model, which becomes very noticeable during commentary-heavy broadcasts. Some TVs handle this better than others, while certain headphones like Sennheiser’s RS 275 TV headphones also offer dedicated low-latency modes.

Don’t overpay for features you’ll never use

HDMI eARC support helps simplify connectivity between your TV and audio system.

One of the easiest mistakes to make with audio gear is paying for features that sound impressive on a spec sheet but are rarely used in day-to-day use.

Take Dolby Atmos support, for instance. The feature sounds attractive, and they really do elevate the audio experience of movies that support the format. But most – if not all – sports broadcast in Singapore don’t take advantage of it. Similarly, extremely high-end surround systems may not dramatically improve regular live TV broadcasts the same way they improve blockbuster films or games.

Instead, it’s often more useful to focus on practical features. Here are some.

HDMI eARC support helps simplify connectivity between your TV and audio system. Wireless subwoofers make placement easier and cleaner in smaller homes. Multi-device connectivity becomes useful if you regularly switch between streaming boxes, gaming consoles and even PCs.

Some soundbars also include dedicated sports or stadium modes, though my experience is that results vary wildly depending on the brand. Some genuinely widen the sound stage and improve the crowd ambience, while others simply boost bass until the overall audio quality becomes too negatively “boomy”.

And while massive speaker power ratings may look impressive in advertisements, most of us living in Singapore flats realistically won’t be able to push our audio systems anywhere near maximum volume – not without earning the ire of our next-door neighbours anyway.

Consider your living room or room’s layout

You might discover that you don’t actually need a complicated setup.

Photo: HWZ

It’s easy to obsess over speakers and specifications while forgetting that the room where it’s placed will affect the sound just as much, if not more than the speakers themselves.

A smaller room with softer furnishings often sounds better than a large empty space filled with hard surfaces that bounce sounds everywhere. Echo can make commentary sound muddy, while poor speaker placement can make surround effects uneven or, in the worst cases, irrelevant.

Even simple adjustments can help. Positioning rear speakers slightly behind your seating position instead of directly beside you usually creates a more “realistic” rear surround effect. Rugs, curtains and fabric sofas can help reduce harsh echo too, and raising a soundbar or centre speaker to a height that’s close to ear level can also improve clarity more than expected.

And honestly, some people may discover they don’t actually need a complicated setup at all. A decent mid-range soundbar properly positioned beneath a TV often delivers a better overall audio experience than an overly ambitious surround setup squeezed awkwardly into a tiny room. And if you are if you’re enjoying what you’re hearing while watching football matches on the tele, believe me you’re more than likely to enjoy watching your favourite Netflix blockbusters on it. In that sense, it totally makes sense to invest in a decent sound system.

(This guide is Part 7 of 7 in our Sports Entertainment Upgrade Special.)
