While the spotlight seemed dominated by names like <em>God of War Laufey<\/em>, and <em>Gears of War: E-Day<\/em>, the real winners of this event season have been the JRPG fans. We now have a lineup to look forward to that is as impressive and exciting as we once saw in the PlayStation 2&#8217;s golden age.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>Up until now, 2026 has been a slow year for new JRPGs. <em>Trails Beyond the Horizon<\/em> finally came out in the West, we explored the cute doll-like world of <em>Dragon Quest 7 Reimagine<\/em><em>d<\/em>, and we hatched eggs in <em>Monster Hunter Stories 3<\/em>. Sure there were other releases, like the <em>Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered<\/em>, and there were future games to be excited about, like <em>The Adventures of Elliot<\/em> and (eventually) <em>Dragon Quest 12<\/em>. To make the next months look even better for JRPG fans, we&#8217;ll also have Trails<em> in the Sky 2nd Chapter <\/em>arriving in September, <em>Tales of Eternia Remastered <\/em>in October, and <em>Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World<\/em> in December.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are too many games to play already \u2014 even more so if we consider different genres. Among them, the ones coming out in the second half of 2026 will be competing amongst themselves to escape <em>GTA 6<\/em>. Even if we can manage to start some of these games once they come out, <em>Final Fantasy 7 Revelation<\/em> will be waiting right around the corner. Even so, the future seems bright for JRPG fans.<\/p>\n<p>The current lineup of upcoming games makes me feel like I&#8217;m back to the early 2000s when the PlayStation 2 had two mainline Final Fantasy games, <em>Persona 3 FES<\/em> and <em>Persona 4<\/em>, <em>Kingdom Hearts 1 <\/em>and <em>2<\/em>, and the Xenosaga trilogy. In recent years, the genre has steadily grown with players getting into the established series like Persona \u2014 which just recently reached the mark of 30 million copies sold worldwide \u2014 to discovering new series because of games like <em>Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter<\/em> and <em>Digimon Story: Time Stranger<\/em>. But now, with a new Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Persona game on the horizon, I can only see the genre growing stronger.<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t ignore that all of these long-running series have laid the foundations for many of the genre&#8217;s aesthetic conventions. The prospect of having all of them coming back around the same time is an event capable of making waves for many years to come.
