{"id":59456,"date":"2026-06-10T04:05:48","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T20:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=59456"},"modified":"2026-06-10T04:05:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T20:05:48","slug":"singapore-must-be-more-cohesive-pm-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=59456","title":{"rendered":"Singapore must be more cohesive: PM Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Singapore\u2019s first-quarter growth was solid and reflects the diversity and strength of its economy, but the global outlook remains uncertain, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on June 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The country is making broad adjustments in areas like economic planning to deal with the uncertainty and technological change, but what is most important is its ability to maintain solidarity and unity, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe cannot fully control how the world changes, but we can choose how we respond, and that response must come from Singaporeans ourselves,\u201d he said at a dialogue with the Singapore Press Club held at the SPH Media auditorium in Toa Payoh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore is more diverse than ever before, with people from different backgrounds, different aspirations and perspectives. That diversity is a tremendous source of strength, PM Wong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cOur greatest strength remains the same \u2013 and that\u2019s our ability to stay united and move forward together as one people,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">And as the world becomes more fractured, Singapore must become more cohesive, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThat\u2019s how we continue to thrive and flourish in this next phase,\u201d said PM Wong at the dialogue titled \u201cSingapore at 61: What\u2019s ahead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While Singapore beat the initial<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/economy\/singapore-economy-grew-4-6-misses-targets-with-iran-war-blurring-outlook?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> first-quarter estimate of 4.6 per cent<\/span><\/a> to grow 6 per cent year on year, the full effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/latest-ceasefire-agreement-unlikely-to-provide-framework-for-stability-between-israel-and-lebanon?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">the Middle East conflict<\/span><\/a> have yet to be felt here, he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He was speaking as the guest of honour at the dialogue, which was part of the Singapore Press Club\u2019s Eminent Speaker Series, presented by the SPH Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Government still expects inflationary pressures to rise, and there is also uncertainty about how artificial intelligence will impact the job market, said PM Wong, who is also Finance Minister.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He raised the example of electricity prices, and said that current tariffs do not yet reflect the full increase in oil prices due to the crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-and-us-launch-attack-on-iran-targeting-its-leadership?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">which began in February 2026.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The global economy has also been able to adapt better than most people expected, he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is because of alternative supplies, rerouting and drawing-down of inventories. \u201cThese buffers have helped to cushion the impact up to now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But it is still an open question on how long the disruption and these buffers will last, he said at the session moderated by The Straits Times associate editor Zakir Hussain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">If the disruption continues and buffers start to dwindle, at some point, the impact on the global economy will be more severe, and there may be more shortages, PM Wong said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This will result in more impact on demand and Singapore\u2019s growth. Rising costs in areas like food and fertilisers are also not yet fully accounted for, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore will also have to navigate a world that is in the midst of \u201cthe most important transition to the global order since the end of the Cold War\u201d, he said. There are also rising middle powers, including regional groupings like ASEAN, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Fortunately, Singapore is moving from a position of strength because the country has built trusted institutions, deep capabilities and a strong reputation, he noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But the Government is aware that it cannot stand still and must adapt and change to stay relevant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That is why it recently undertook a major review of its economic strategies, PM Wong said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Recommendations from this include sharpening Singapore\u2019s value proposition to the world, and building more resilience in the public and private sectors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&amp;apos;We are just trying to maintain stability&amp;apos;: PM Wong on Singapore&amp;apos;s population\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dD1la1ezBUM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It also means continuing to step up assurance and support for Singaporeans, especially in an era of rapid change, PM Wong said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is not new and the Government has been doing this consistently over the years, but going forward, it expects change to be faster and more frequent, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PM Wong: Singapore can be an AI application hub\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w1WShHjfN7M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is considering what additional moves it can make to strengthen support systems for households, families and workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ultimately, its belief is that the best form of social protection for Singaporeans is to enable them to stay adaptable, capable and employable throughout life, PM Wong said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When asked about the better-than-expected economic growth, he said: \u201cWe start out by providing as objective an outlook as we can, sometimes, and in fact, many times, we end up doing better than expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That does not mean the Government\u2019s assessment was initially wrong, he said, but rather that Singapore has performed better than expected. \u201cThat\u2019s something we should be proud of, and that\u2019s something we should be happy about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that he hopes growth for the rest of the year is better than initial assessments \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/singapore-keeps-2026-economic-growth-forecast-at-2-4-despite-higher-downside-risks-from-iran-war?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">current forecasts are for growth at 2 to 4 per cent<\/span><\/a> \u2013 but there continues to be uncertainty also from the potential impact of<!-- --> AI<!-- --> on the job market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When asked about jobs going to non-residents and what this means for the Government\u2019s \u201creport card\u201d, PM Wong said one should not look at quarterly job data but at the overall labour market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cLook across the entire society and see, at the end of the day, whether or not Singaporeans are indeed having a better life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ultimately, Singaporeans will decide whether or not the government has done a good job or not, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIn our system of democracy, we have a strong and decisive government, but it is always held to account.
