So what makes HMO TFT technology different from the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels currently used in Apple devices?<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Unlike LTPO, oxide TFTs do not require complex manufacturing processes such as laser crystallisation and ion implantation. This not only simplifies production, but also <b>lowers manufacturing costs<\/b>. They also offer lower power consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Since the always-on display accounts for a significant portion of a smartwatch\u2019s power consumption, advances in panel efficiency is critical for extending the battery life without increasing device size. <\/p>\n<p>HMO TFT could therefore <b>enable Apple to deliver longer battery life on the Apple Watch<\/b>, while potentially improving profit margins or offsetting rising component costs elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Industry sources cited by TheElec claim that Apple is considering the Apple Watch as the first product to adopt the new display technology before expanding it to larger-volume devices such as the iPhone and iPad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">LG Display plans to use sputtering, a thin-film deposition process commonly used in oxide semiconductor manufacturing, for easier integration with its existing production lines. However, several technical hurdles remain before mass production can begin.
