First with E3 and now with Summer Game Fest and all the associated publisher-led events, early June is the time when the industry shows off its biggest games. As players, it’s also the time when we set absolutely unrealistic expectations and have our hopes crushed underfoot.

We all have our perpetual picks for a game we hope to see, but know that we probably won’t. For a long time the classic example was Hollow Knight: Silksong, a game that became so notorious for fan hype and a disappointing no-show that it became synonymous with the clown applying makeup meme. Now that Silksong has been released, that curse has been broken. But in its place grew a thousand clown noses, as all of us don our own personal big red schnozes in hopes of the game we really want to see, even if deep down we know we probably won’t.

Bloodborne

At this point I’d be content with a remaster, but if we’re out here throwing out games we’d love to see take center stage at this year’s Summer Game Fest, either a remake or a follow-up to 2015’s moody masterpiece is at the top of my list. For years now, From Software fans have been clamoring for a Bloodborne remake–one that retains the original’s aesthetic sensibilities but delivers the smooth, 60fps gameplay associated with modern consoles. While I’d argue Bloodborne is already a masterpiece, a performance upgrade would certainly help in making the action game stand the test of time. And while they’re at it, I wouldn’t say no to a few quality of life upgrades, such as the ability to rest at lanterns or travel directly between them.

However, if I am truly allowed to dream big here, what I really want is to return to Yharnam for a new adventure. Not a sequel, mind you, but something that uses the lore established in Bloodborne to weave an entirely new scenario. Though there is delight in what parts of Bloodborne are simply unknowable, I wouldn’t mind learning a bit more about Castle Cainhurst and its Vilebloods, or about the early expeditions into the Chalice dungeons. — Jessica Cogswell

Splinter Cell

The Splinter Cell remake was first announced in late 2021, meaning we are quickly approaching the five-year mark and have yet to see any actual gameplay or even a cinematic trailer. While it has been confirmed by Ubisoft relatively recently that the game is still in production, despite layoffs at developer Ubisoft Toronto, it remains entirely unclear when we’ll see more of it. Like Sam Fisher, perhaps it’s just really, really good at hiding, but the last Splinter Cell game was released all the way back in 2013.

Sure, the animated Netflix series sort of makes the wait easier and at least shows there’s fan interest in the franchise, but since Splinter Cell Blacklist’s launch, two console generations have passed, and it looks like a third might be on the way. We’ve gotten two The Division games since then, along with two Ghost Recon games, and two Rainbow Six games (remember Extraction?). Sam Fisher has even made guest appearances in several of them, but his own game remains as mysterious as Third Echelon. — Gabe Gurwin

Rez 2

While a small part of the credit for this can go toward various re-releases (HD, Infinite, VR support), there’s no game I have returned to on a regular basis, on as long a time horizon, as Rez. And while I think it’s already brilliant, I would not by any means complain about more: The incredible blend of music and gameplay that Rez offers has never been matched by another game for me. The foray into a more open environment in Rez Infinite’s Area X felt like only a taste of where Rez could go. I’ve been happy to see developer Enhance branch out with fantastic games like Tetris Effect, but every time we get any kind of showcase, I’m secretly wishing for some kind of sequel to Rez more than anything else.

Between Enhance being a relatively small studio that can only work on so much at one time, and Rez not being a huge name brand that the masses are demanding return, it hardly feels like a certainty that it’ll ever happen. And like clockwork, my hopes for an opportunity to play the best Zelda are shattered like low-cost dentures biting into a marshmallow. Now, some of you might be wondering why I don’t just grab a Switch Online subscription and play the GameCube version of Wind Waker, but that’s not the one I want. To paraphrase the only memorable line of Wonder Woman 1984, Wind Waker is good, but Wind Waker HD is better.

Wind Waker HD for the Wii U still hits the spot for taking a beloved classic and tweaking it perfectly. The HD version naturally looks better with its sharper resolution, but then you also get improvements to sailing, a much-needed streamlining to the Triforce quest, and other small changes under the hood that add up to create the superior experience. Considering how Nintendo is happy to re-release other Zelda games or launch new spin-offs, I’m expecting the next Nintendo Direct to once again see me cursing my screen by the time the livestream fades to black. It’s honestly baffling how Nintendo hasn’t re-released this evergreen Zelda adventure yet, but maybe with the live-action Zelda movie on the horizon, Wind Waker HD could finally see the light of day again–right? – Darryn Bonthuys

Chrono Trigger Remake

Square Enix has already produced remastered versions of two of my all-time favorite RPGs, Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy Tactics. Not satisfied with just two of the three, I’m now constantly waiting for them to pull the hat trick with the all-timer: Chrono Trigger. A remake of this masterpiece of classic RPG design has been rumored for ages, but the company has never officially confirmed anything publicly.

To be sure, a remake of Chrono Trigger in particular must be a daunting task. This is widely considered to be one of the best RPGs of all time, a fusion of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest sensibilities that blended together beautifully to create something full of humor, heart, and heroism. It holds a special place in a lot of our hearts, and so satisfying fans with a remake will be difficult. But hope still springs eternal.

The biggest question looming over a theoretical Chrono Trigger remake isn’t the why or even the when–it seems to be a practical inevitability at this point. But what will it look like? Square Enix has now produced multiple different styles of retro remakes: the Pixel Remasters of classic Final Fantasy, the touched-up FFT Ivalice Chronicles, the HD-2D Live-A-Live, and the full 3D conversion of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. Any of those styles could be a great fit if done correctly. So each time there’s a big game showcase, I put on my clown nose and wait, and hope, and curse, and then prepare for the next time. — Steve Watts

F-Zero

It has been 24 years since the last original installment of the F-Zero franchise. Nintendo’s chaotic, experimental live service remix of the original Super Nintendo classic, F-Zero 99, was a welcome nugget of nostalgia, but did little to scratch the itch for a wholly original entry into the series. Familiar tracks boasting (too) many players was a unique way to relive the series’ first game, but the meat and potatoes of the futuristic racer lies in the foundation laid by later entries: F-Zero X, with its X Cup that randomly generated endless courses, and F-Zero GX, with a robust, otherworldly-difficult Story Mode. I yearn for a full-fledged sequel to those masterpieces, with robust 3D environments and world-building to complement them.

Gamers under 30 years old know Captain Falcon as a Smash Bros. character, and may not even recognize that he came from a long-forgotten and overlooked Nintendo IP. We need to correct that. For the last twenty years, I have joked that I’ll kick the bucket before we get a new F-Zero on our doorstep. As I get older, that joke is becoming less funny and more of a reality. – David McCutcheon

Left 4 Dead 3

We all know the joke about how Valve can’t count to three, but for me, no missing third installment from their long line of them hurts more than Left 4 Dead 3. We’ve had so many imitators over the years, and some of them are even quite good, but L4D and its sequel benefited from their simplicity and their timelessly fun core gameplay loop. Some have wondered if a prospective Left 4 Dead 3 could even make sense today, in a world where multiplayer games seem to demand things like battle passes, daily check-in systems, and metagame elements that Left 4 Dead mostly predated and totally ignored.

For me, not one of the many games built in its image quite fills the hole in my heart for L4D3. Some of the series’ quirks, like how characters seemed to ice-skate around and how there was no aiming down-sight on most of the guns, tend to be things that other studios look to correct, but I think they were integral to the way L4D was so easy to get into, and the “AI Director” that scripted each round to feel different has remained the Achilles Heel for nearly every other project like it. I’ll keep playing all these Left 4 Dead-likes, seeking just one of them that hits the same, but I worry none will, and so each year I put on the clown makeup once more, hoping this is the year Valve discovers the fabled three. — Mark Delaney

Uncharted 5

It’s now been more than 10 years since Naughty Dog released Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in May 2016, and I am hoping we get an announcement of Uncharted 5 soon. Yes, Uncharted 4 capped off Nathan Drake’s story, and Naughty Dog is working on other projects, but I can still dream. After all, Naughty Dog has even said it could hand the reins off to another developer to make Uncharted 5. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us games are fantastic, but they are so dark and dreary. The Uncharted series has a totally different, more lighthearted tone, and that is one I’m more excited about these days. Uncharted 4 capped off with an epilogue starring Cassie Drake, and it would be exciting, narratively, to see Cassie pick up the reins from her parents and start a journey of her own. Here’s to hoping Sony has Uncharted 5 ready for the PlayStation 6 launch–what a way to kick off the next generation of consoles and provide a technical showcase for the system. — Eddie Makuch

The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Midna is best girl and all you people throwing around the likes of Medli, Mipha, Malon, or any other The Legend of Zelda character whose name starts with the letter M are lying to yourselves. So unless I have a hankering to pick up the Twilight Princess manga again and have a good cry over how much more emotional it makes Midna and Link’s relationship, I have to bust out some very old hardware and a 20-year-old video game.

And while, yes, an HD remaster released for Wii U in 2016, the game never ported to Switch or Switch 2 despite rumors and reports of such a wonderful delight having circulated for years.
