{"id":58054,"date":"2026-06-04T20:24:02","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T12:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=58054"},"modified":"2026-06-04T20:24:02","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T12:24:02","slug":"her-home-is-like-a-buffet-to-them-residents-say-womans-daily-pigeon-feeding-causing-problems-in-chai-chee-estate-singapore-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=58054","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Her home is like a buffet to them&#8217;: Residents say woman&#8217;s daily pigeon feeding causing problems in Chai Chee estate, Singapore News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Residents of a Chai Chee HDB block say an elderly woman&#8217;s habit of feeding pigeons from her flat has turned the place into a &#8220;buffet&#8221; for birds.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting mess has led to some being unable to open their windows.<\/p>\n<p>The incident involves a fifth-floor unit at Block 805 Chai Chee Road, where an elderly woman is said to have been feeding pigeons for years, Lianhe Zaobao reported.<\/p>\n<p>A video posted on Reddit on Tuesday (June 2) showed the birds perched on the exterior ledges of the flat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One pigeon was seen flying into the unit through an open kitchen window, before a group of birds emerged from inside.<\/p>\n<p>According to Zaobao, bird droppings covered parts of the window ledges and exterior walls of the block, and pigeons were also observed gathering on the ledges of the nearby ESR BizPark building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/IMG_1211.jpg\" data-entity-uuid=\"98d5e80e-c73c-48e4-a845-6beec0235942\" data-entity-type=\"file\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" data-caption=\"During a site visit on June 4, AsiaOne observed several pigeons gathering on the ledges of the nearby ESR BizPark building.&lt;br&gt;PHOTO: AsiaOne\/Shafiq Apandi\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Residents told the Chinese newspaper that the woman, believed to be in her 70s or 80s, previously fed pigeons on the ground floor before allegedly moving the activity into her home about a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>A neighbour who is a 61-year-old security officer, Lin Jiecheng (transliterated), claimed that large numbers of pigeons now flock to the area daily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her home is like an all-you-can eat buffet that&#8217;s open to pigeons all day,&#8221; he complained, as dozens of birds would fly around the area during mealtimes.<\/p>\n<p>He added that pigeons frequently perch on his window ledges and occasionally fly into his home, leaving their excrement behind.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, his family no longer opens its windows and has installed plastic sheeting to make cleaning easier, he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/IMG_1212.jpg\" data-entity-uuid=\"fb5e6c8e-693e-46a4-9660-a8efc8bbf459\" data-entity-type=\"file\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" data-caption=\"Bird droppings were visible on residents' windows, making them appear dirty and unclean.&lt;br&gt;PHOTO: AsiaOne\/Shafiq Apandi\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Another resident living on the same floor told Zaobao that the town council had visited the unit on several occasions, but the problem has yet to be resolved.<\/p>\n<h2>Town council trying to engage resident<\/h2>\n<p>When contacted by AsiaOne, East Coast Town Council, which manages the area, said it is aware of the situation and working with the National Parks Board (NParks) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).<\/p>\n<p>Town council officers have attempted to engage the occupant of the unit since February to no avail. Efforts to reach the resident will continue, it said.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a &#8220;multi-pronged effort&#8221; to improve estate cleanliness, the town council said it has coordinated with NParks and NEA to manage the bird population in the area, put up notices at the void deck advising residents not to feed birds, and increased the frequency of cleaning in the void deck and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The feeding of birds and high-rise littering are offences under the purview of NParks and NEA respectively. The town council will assist the agencies where necessary,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is also moving to strengthen penalties against illegal wildlife feeding.<\/p>\n<p>Under proposed legislative changes, first-time offenders could face fines of up to $10,000, double the current maximum of $5,000.
