{"id":57847,"date":"2026-06-04T03:16:01","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T19:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=57847"},"modified":"2026-06-04T03:16:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T19:16:01","slug":"8-arrested-in-choa-chu-kang-tampines-raids-over-26000-duty-unpaid-cigarette-packets-seized-singapore-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=57847","title":{"rendered":"8 arrested in Choa Chu Kang, Tampines raids; over 26,000 duty-unpaid cigarette packets seized, Singapore News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Singapore Customs arrested eight men and seized 26,235 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes following two enforcement operations on May 14.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The total duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) evaded amounted to about $485,773.<\/p>\n<p>The two operations took place along Choa Chu Kang Street 52 and Tampines Avenue 9.<\/p>\n<p>Three Singaporeans and four Indonesian nationals were arrested from the raid in Choa Chu Kang, with another Singaporean man arrested in Tampines. All eight men are between the ages of 33 and 49.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore Customs also seized a Singapore-registered car and $38,325 in suspected proceeds from the sale of duty-unpaid cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>In a news release on Monday, Singapore Customs said that officers dug up 21,992 packets of duty\u2011unpaid cigarettes concealed in cartons disguised as snack products during their checks at a unit in Choa Chu Kang.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some packets of the cigarettes had also been removed from the snack cartons, said Singapore Customs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/02062026_SG%20customs%20raid%20%28house%29.jpg\" data-entity-uuid=\"bfecacab-f52f-47a3-96e3-2ad9d285d0ad\" data-entity-type=\"file\" height=\"630\" width=\"1200\" data-caption=\"A picture of the cartons of boxes found at the residential unit at Choa Chu Kang Street 52 (left) and another picture of duty-unpaid cigarettes disguised as snack products (right).&lt;br&gt;PHOTO: Singapore Customs\"\/><\/p>\n<p>On the same day, Singapore Customs conducted a follow-up operation in Tampines where they found a Singaporean man unloading red plastic bags from a Singapore-registered car.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/02062026_SG%20customs%20raid%20%28car%29.jpg\" data-entity-uuid=\"632cb1b6-a391-49a9-8306-862fc0d5c0d6\" data-entity-type=\"file\" height=\"630\" width=\"1200\" data-caption=\"Red plastic bags stored in the boot of a car caught at Tampines Avenue 9 (left) and a packet of duty-unpaid cigarettes discovered in the bags (right).&lt;br&gt;PHOTO: Singapore Customs\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An additional 4,243 packets of duty\u2011unpaid cigarettes were uncovered in the car and the man was arrested, with customs officers seizing both the duty-unpaid cigarettes and the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Court proceedings against all eight men are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>The penalty for buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, possessing or dealing in duty-unpaid cigarettes is a fine of up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and\/or a jail term of up to six years.
