A Singapore taxi driver who found a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch in her cab is appealing for the rightful owner to come forward, saying she will not release the item without a properly verified and documented process.<\/p>\n
The driver, who goes by Jan, found the watch in her taxi in May. After visiting a Rolex store in Orchard Road, she was informed that a similar model was listed at approximately S$120,000.<\/p>\n
She subsequently made a public appeal on Facebook to locate the owner.<\/p>\n
Inconsistent claims<\/strong><\/p>\n Jan told TOC that her taxi company’s lost-and-found team informed her that someone had reported losing a watch in her cab. However, she said the information provided did not logically connect with her recollection of the trip, and when she raised this concern, the explanation shifted.<\/p>\n She was subsequently informed of a second claimant \u2014 a different person from the first \u2014 also asserting ownership of the watch.<\/p>\n Jan said she asked the lost-and-found team three times whether the rightful owner could contact her directly to assist with verification. Her question was not directly answered.<\/p>\n “Because this is a high-value watch, I believe ownership should be properly verified before release,” she said.<\/p>\n Company pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n Jan’s taxi company subsequently wrote to her requiring her to bring the found item to its office by 29 May 2026 at 8.30am. The email stated that failure to do so would result in a management review of her hiring agreement.<\/p>\n Jan said she was not refusing to hand over the watch, but wanted a clearly documented verification process in place before doing so. She was not provided with any written explanation of how ownership would be verified before the watch was released to a claimant.<\/p>\n Rolex declines to assist<\/strong><\/p>\n Jan also approached Rolex Singapore, understanding that Rolex maintains an international system linked to watch ownership and registered-owner details. She had hoped Rolex could help identify or contact the registered owner directly.<\/p>\n According to Jan, Rolex Singapore replied in writing that it was unable to accept the watch for safekeeping, verify ownership on behalf of any claimant, or become involved in releasing the watch to any individual.
