Fake Call Detection by default<\/h2>\n
Per its announcement<\/u>, Google is rolling out fake call detection for its default Phone app \u2014 globally \u2014 to all Android-powered mobile phones running Android 12 or newer. That includes Singapore.<\/p>\n
The feature would be enabled by default, and it works behind the scenes; the user does not need to do anything special to enjoy it.<\/p>\n
How does it work?<\/h2>\n
As Google explains<\/u>, Fake Call Detection in the Phone app relies on a private handshake and encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology.<\/p>\n
In short, when a caller calls your phone, it will initiate a handshake with the person bearing the same name in your contact list (for example, a contact saved as \u201cMom\u201d).<\/p>\n
The silent handshake pings the contact in your list to check whether their device is the one calling. Note that it checks on a device level, not by reading the number or the name. It also does not need the contact to do anything in return.<\/p>\n Google illustrated what would happen in the event of a real call versus a spoofed one.<\/p>\n Image: Google (The Keyword)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n At this juncture, your phone has two outcomes: if the call was truly initiated by the contact\u2019s device, nothing special happens. However, if the handshake fails (the contact\u2019s device \u201csays\u201d it\u2019s not making a call to you now), Android will treat the call as spoofed.<\/p>\n In the second outcome, your Phone app will display a warning with a helpful message asking you to hang up immediately.<\/p>\n The main aim of Fake Call Detection is to prevent users from falling prey to impersonation calls or even deepfake video calls in real time.<\/p>\n This digital handshake is conducted using RCS technology<\/u>.<\/p>\n Fake Call Detection is rolling out to all Android handsets globally. As long as your phone runs Android 12 or later, it doesn\u2019t matter which brand you use.
