That includes Singapore.

The feature would be enabled by default, and it works behind the scenes; the user does not need to do anything special to enjoy it.

How does it work?

As Google explains, Fake Call Detection in the Phone app relies on a private handshake and encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology.

In short, when a caller calls your phone, it will initiate a handshake with the person bearing the same name in your contact list (for example, a contact saved as “Mom”).

The silent handshake pings the contact in your list to check whether their device is the one calling. Note that it checks on a device level, not by reading the number or the name. It also does not need the contact to do anything in return.

Google illustrated what would happen in the event of a real call versus a spoofed one.

Image: Google (The Keyword)

At this juncture, your phone has two outcomes: if the call was truly initiated by the contact’s device, nothing special happens.
