{"id":57522,"date":"2026-06-02T23:08:45","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T15:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=57522"},"modified":"2026-06-02T23:08:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T15:08:45","slug":"new-venomous-box-jellyfish-discovered-off-coast-of-sentosa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=57522","title":{"rendered":"New venomous box jellyfish discovered off coast of Sentosa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Researchers from<!-- --> <!-- -->Singapore and Japan have discovered a new species of box jellyfish near Sentosa,<!-- --> <!-- -->and have advised beachgoers to take precautions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is the first discovery of a jellyfish of the <i>Chironex<\/i> genus since 2017, adding <!-- -->a new species<!-- --> to one of the world\u2019s most venomous animal groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The researchers from<!-- --> <!-- -->Tohoku University and the National University of Singapore\u2019s Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum and Tropical Marine <!-- -->Science<!-- --> Institute have named this new species <i>Chironex blakangmati<\/i>, after Sentosa\u2019s original name: Pulau Blakang Mati<!-- -->, or Island of Death Behind<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is the fourth known species of box jellyfish in the <i>Chironex<\/i> genus<!-- --> <!-- -->in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The precise population of this new species of venomous jellyfish in Singapore\u2019s waters remains unknown. So far, confirmed sightings have been rare and sporadic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The researchers advised beachgoers to take precautions while swimming in the ocean, such as by wearing covered swimsuits and using a high-visibility buoy if away from shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The research project<!-- --> <!-- -->received funding from the <!-- -->Tohoku University &amp; Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) Advanced Institute for Marine Ecosystem Change (WPI-AIMEC)<b> <\/b>and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation\u2019s Ocean Shot project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Named after their cube-like bell, box jellyfish are a carnivorous species considered highly advanced among jellyfish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Unlike other jellyfish, they are able to swim, rather than simply <!-- -->float<!-- --> <!-- -->with<!-- --> the current. Plain vinegar is known to prevent box jellyfish tentacles from releasing more venom when poured onto the sting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is also advisable to stay clear of any jellyfish in sight, either in the water or on the beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Victims stung by a jellyfish should stay calm and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to remove the tentacles with bare hands as this can cause them to release more toxins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Instead, flood the area with seawater or plain vinegar for at least 30 seconds, before removing the tentacle with a towel or pair of tweezers.
