KUALA LUMPUR (May 31): Premium bus operator Aeroline\u2019s planned exit from the Kuala Lumpur market highlights the need to balance tourism transport accessibility, market competition and traveller convenience as Malaysia strengthens its regional tourism position, said the Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (Mita).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Aeroline, which carries passengers between the capital and Singapore, announced its exit after two decades amid operational challenges linked to terminal arrangements away from its previous site at Corus KLCC and later The Exchange TRX, as well as commercial fees imposed to operate in approved terminals such as Lalaport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
In a statement, Mita president Mint Leong said Aeroline has the right to make operational decisions based on its business model, cost structure and market positioning, noting that the company has long operated as a premium long-distance coach service provider.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“However, from the perspective of the tourism industry and consumers, Mita believes Aeroline should also consider continuing to utilise its multiple approved operating locations, including bus stops at 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Lalaport, IOI City Mall, and also consider major terminals such as Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) and Terminal Bersepadu Gombak,” Leong said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“This would maintain service coverage in the Kuala Lumpur market and continue serving passengers who have long supported its brand. After all, picking up and dropping off passengers by the roadside is unsafe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“Mita hopes that Aeroline and the Lalaport Bus Terminal can reach a coordinated solution through discussion, as it provides a comfortable waiting area in the city centre,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Mita noted that other long-distance and cross-border coach operators continue to provide services with varying fare structures and product positioning, ranging from premium offerings to more affordable alternatives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
According to Mita, fares for coach services from Kuala Lumpur Lalaport to Singapore currently start from RM59.96, compared with Aeroline\u2019s ticket prices of RM128.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Leong said healthy market competition supports service improvements, price rationalisation and product innovation, particularly as demand grows among free independent travellers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
She said travellers increasingly prioritise factors such as transport connectivity, choice of coach services, price transparency and convenience when selecting destinations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Malaysia requires a more comprehensive, diverse and competitive tourism transport ecosystem as regional tourism competition intensifies, adding that open competition and traveller convenience remain key to supporting long-term tourism industry growth, she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
