{"id":57104,"date":"2026-06-01T10:42:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T02:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=57104"},"modified":"2026-06-01T10:42:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T02:42:00","slug":"lionel-tan-founding-member-of-singapores-tang-quartet-dies-at-60","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=57104","title":{"rendered":"Lionel Tan, founding member of Singapore\u2019s T\u2019ang Quartet, dies at 60"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 Violinist Lionel Tan, a founding member of the T\u2019ang Quartet and a key figure in Singapore\u2019s classical music scene, died on May 31. <!-- -->He was <!-- -->60.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His death was announced in a Facebook <!-- -->post<!-- --> by the quartet on June 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In response to a query in the comments section, the group said Tan had died following \u201ca long fight with cancer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His <!-- -->elder<!-- --> brother, cellist Leslie Tan, who co-founded the quartet <!-- -->alongside<!-- --> him, Ang Chek Meng and Ng Yu-Ying, also paid tribute in a social media <!-- -->post<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen we were younger, I always looked up to him&#8230; Lionel led \u2013 I was always a step or two behind,\u201d Leslie Tan wrote in an emotional tribute on Facebook. \u201cTonight Lionel beat me to it again. He should not have departed before me, but he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Of their careers,<!-- --> he said: \u201cWe shared a few lifetimes together performing, teaching and sharing. He left a legacy that I am so proud to be part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that Lionel was \u201cstill so considerate\u201d even in his final hours, asking the family to head to the hospital lounge instead of standing in his room, and telling them not to fuss and to take care of their mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Formed in <!-- -->1992<!-- -->, the T\u2019ang Quartet is widely regarded as Singapore\u2019s first full-time professional chamber ensemble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The group went on to earn international recognition for its interpretations of classical, romantic and modern music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its name \u2013 T\u2019ang Quartet \u2013 was created by combining the surnames of all founding members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">All four musicians first met through the Singapore Youth Orchestra in the <!-- -->1980s<!-- --> before playing together at functions as a quartet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over three decades, the T\u2019ang Quartet became one of Singapore\u2019s most prominent cultural ambassadors, performing extensively both locally and overseas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Among its notable appearances was a performance at the opening of the Singapore <!-- -->Biennale<!-- --> in September 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Tan brothers left the quartet shortly before its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/life\/singapores-tang-quartet-turns-30-with-a-bang?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">30th anniversary in 2022<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They were succeeded by Han Oh and Wang Zihao, who <!-- -->joined<!-- --> the ensemble in 2020 and 2021 respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cCountless hours in practice rooms. Long journeys on planes, trains and cars. Beautiful concert venues all across the world. <!-- -->Fun appearances on tv, radio, magazines. A journey forged together through passion, hard work and perseverance.
