A positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is also expected to develop in the 2nd half of the year. These climate patterns are projected to bring warmer and drier weather across Singapore and the surrounding region from June to October 2026, MSS said. It will also increase the risk of transboundary haze affecting Singapore and the region. El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern characterised by changes in both the ocean and atmosphere within the equatorial Pacific, and usually lasts 9-12 months. It can bring “widespread and, at times, severe changes in the global climate”, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
