{"id":56217,"date":"2026-05-29T12:43:41","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T04:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=56217"},"modified":"2026-05-29T12:43:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T04:43:41","slug":"systems-restored-after-major-tech-glitch-strands-thousands-at-malaysias-borders-on-may-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=56217","title":{"rendered":"Systems restored after major tech glitch strands thousands at Malaysia\u2019s borders on May 28"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><span class=\"dateline\">JOHOR BARU<\/span> \u2013<!-- --> Tens of thousands of people were stuck in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/heavy-traffic-expected-at-land-checkpoints-during-hari-raya-haji-vesak-day-june-school-holidays-ica?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> long queues at entry points<\/span><\/a> across Malaysia on May 28 after the entire immigration system crashed again following a major glitch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Immigration officers were left frantically trying to clear locals and foreigners manually as all computer-based systems were down for five hours, from 4.30am to 9.30am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It was the second major crash in just over a month. A similar incident left thousands stranded for about two hours on April 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While many complained they were stuck from 4.30am,<!-- --> Immigration Department director-general Zakaria Shaa\u00adban<!-- --> said the incident occurred at around 5am and lasted until 8.45am because of technical issues at the Malaysian Immig\u00adration Systems (MyIMMs) data centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe system was back online after rectifying work was carried out. The system was not hacked. The MyIMMs system is old, and I cannot ensure that such a problem will not recur,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe MyIMMs system is already 30 years old. Problems are bound to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A new system, known as the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe), is supposed to replace MyIMMs by 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Datuk Zakaria said such disruptions may recur until the NIISe system is up fully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe will endure them until the NIISe system is ready,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Earlier in May, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said during a visit to Johor that the vendor of MyNIISe had been told to prepare mitigation plans ahead of the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/rts-set-to-start-in-2027-but-jb-residents-are-bracing-themselves-for-years-of-congestion?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link operations in 2027.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The government, he said, is committed to minimising any form of technical disruption in the new system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A Home Ministry official said the latest disruption affected most of the 114 checkpoints nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Malaysia has 56 entry points via sea, 30 via land and 28 airports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The official said long queues were reported at both land checkpoints in Johor, as it was \u201cpeak time\u201d for tens of thousands of Malaysians rushing to Singa\u00adpore for work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe had to redeploy all our personnel to man manual counters at the bus halls, motorcycle and <!-- -->vehicle<!-- --> lanes,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cNot only were our autogates down, (but) even our facial recognition systems were also out,\u201d the official said, adding that additional security personnel were also deployed to maintain order at the checkpoints. <!-- -->THE STAR\/ASIA NEWS
