It feels like Xiaomi has dialled back on the saturation of Leica Vibrant, which makes it feel more accurate to the eye. As such, all of our imaging photos were shot on Leica Vibrant mode this time round.

Portrait shots were surprisingly good, with fast eye tracking and autofocus helping to get sharp shots even when the subject was moving around.

The telephoto camera’s hardware is the same as before, and we get the same excellent shots at 5x optical zoom. The 10x lossless zoom is pretty serviceable if you have enough light and your hands are steady, else it can get a bit blurry. The ultrawide is fairly standard for this class of device and we don’t notice any improvements, nor is there anything noteworthy to comment about.

The phone handles decently in low-light situations, although it does struggle a little in challenging situations that have a lot of contrast between pitch-dark shadows and very bright light sources. The software does a good job of boosting the image while taming the bright areas so there aren’t too many blown highlights. Indoor photos turned out well across the different focal lengths, and we’re glad it delivers in this regard to help maintain coherency if one is sharing a variety of shots for a montage.

Leica Live Moment sample 1

Photo: HWZ

Leica Live Moment sample 2

Photo: HWZ

Something new this year is Xiaomi’s take on the iPhone’s Live Photo functionality, which they’re calling Leica Live Moment. With moderate use and a few hours of gaming, a full charge could last us about 1.5 days.

And if you somehow manage to drain all of that battery quickly, the phone has 100W wired charging, so juicing it back up is incredibly quick. A 0-50% charge took us just 25 minutes, while a full charge took a little longer at 74 minutes since charging speeds drop significantly after it hits the 90% mark. If you’re wondering how does its charging performance stack up compared to other phones, you’ll be glad to know that it’s exactly as per our expectation considering it has a rather large uptick in battery capacity over its preceding model. In other words, competitive to others with similar charging abilities and capacity.

The retail units in Singapore will include a 100W charging brick and cable, although any compatible third-party charger will work thanks to USB PPS (Programmable Power Supply) support, an extended feature of the USB Power Delivery standard.

There’s also 50W wireless charging just like the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, although you’ll have to purchase the Xiaomi wireless charger separately.

Is it still a good value flagship-lite smartphone?

Xiaomi 17T Pro in Deep Blue

Photo: HWZ

Xiaomi’s T series is possibly the best example of “don’t fix what’s not broken”. For the last three years, the Chinese company has played it safe and avoided making any significant changes. Some might feel it’s boring, but for people who just want a reliable flagship-esque smartphone at this price point, it’s hard to suggest anything else.

Even though the price has increased, it’s a reasonable increment in comparison to other competitors this year. If you keep in mind the memory chip supply issues worldwide, then the increase doesn’t actually sting as much when put in right context that it’s a problem for all gadgets in general. Let’s compare the 512GB edition of Xiaomi T-series Pro models and their recommended retail prices:-

Everything has mostly remained similar, while improving on a few selective areas, like the much larger battery capacity and a bump in charging speed, which means that you’re still getting a better device than the year before, and that’s not yet factoring the improved processor and colourways. Even the $200 bump in price (over the Xiaomi 14T Pro) is looking to be par for the course considering other price revisions we’re noticing elsewhere. The price drop on the Xiaomi 15T Pro was mainly due to keeping changes small and maintaining a different kind of launch strategy without a special pre-order price.

There are a few competitors around this price range, but the 17T Pro offers just the right blend of hardware, features and price that make it a standout. The Honor 600 Pro is priced similarly, but uses an older processor, has a lower refresh rate and can’t match the 17T Pro’s battery endurance. The Samsung Galaxy S25 FE is an older smartphone that retailed for about the same price at launch, but it’s soon to be replaced by the Galaxy S26 FE later this year.

We haven’t tested and benchmarked other competitors like the OPPO Reno15 Pro Max (S$1,049) or the newly announced Vivo X300 FE (S$1,099), but the Xiaomi 17T Pro triumphs them in terms of battery capacity, charging speed, and display refresh rate. It’s also the only phone with a 5x optical zoom. in this price category. Additionally, it’s ever-so-slightly cheaper, although the Reno15 Pro Max comes with 512GB of storage for that price.

While it’s not fair to compare it to true flagship-level phones like the OPPO Find X9 Pro, you’ll notice that the performance benchmark results aren’t that far off either, even though the 17T Pro is significantly more affordable.

Left to right: Xiaomi 17T, Xiaomi 17T Pro

Photo: HWZ

Even within Xiaomi’s lineup, there’s a place for each model.
