{"id":56015,"date":"2026-05-28T18:12:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T10:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=56015"},"modified":"2026-05-28T18:12:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T10:12:39","slug":"singaporeans-invited-to-discuss-education-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=56015","title":{"rendered":"Singaporeans invited to discuss education policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> A series of conversations with Singaporeans by the Ministry of Education (MOE) started in April to gather views and ideas on education policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The first public session led by Education Minister Desmond Lee will be held on June 27.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The public can sign up for the in-person sessions on the ministry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/educationconversations.moe.gov.sg\/?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Education Conversations microsite.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Lee had in January announced the intent to start these conversations as part of a broader effort to relook the system and curb the education \u201carms race\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a statement on May 28, the MOE said the conversations will address<!-- --> <!-- -->topics like moderating examination stakes, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/parenting-education\/reviewing-exam-difficulty-how-psle-results-are-used-among-ideas-to-lower-exam-stakes-desmond-lee?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">use of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) for Secondary 1 posting.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Other areas include reviewing the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme to strengthen student development, improve selection and enhance accessibility, as well as strengthen Character and Citizenship Education and co-curricular activities to nurture values and life skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">MOE will continue these conversations in 2026 and into 2027. Those who are unable to attend but wish to share their views and ideas can do so in English and vernacular languages through the microsite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a statement, Mr Lee said: \u201cLooking ahead, the world our children will inherit will be very different from ours. We must do more to move away from seeing education as an arms race, shift beyond an overly narrow focus on academic grades and enable our children to develop more holistically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe Education Conversations build on earlier efforts by bringing together people who care deeply about our children to help shape a stronger education system for a changing world. We will keep an open mind and listen widely, because no one has a monopoly on good ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a social media post on May 28, Mr Lee said the conversations he has had with parents, educators and young people since April have been \u201ccandid and heartfelt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere were many diverse views raised, including concerns about the unhealthy levels of stress that comes with PSLE and DSA preparation, and hopes for a curriculum that focuses more on building real-world skills and allows our children to be resilient and grow holistically,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that though Singapore\u2019s education landscape is always evolving, and deliberate shifts have been made to reduce the over-emphasis on grades, more can be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/parenting-education\/p1-registration-system-to-be-reviewed-to-improve-social-mixing-in-primary-schools-desmond-lee?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Another review on the Primary 1 registration system<\/span><\/a> is already under way.
