After 2.5 years, Sennheiser has finally launched the new Momentum 5 Wireless<\/b> headphones. While it looks quite similar to the Momentum 4 Wireless, Sennheiser has refined the design by removing small details like the ring surrounding the faceplate and adding premium-looking metallic accents for the microphones.<\/p>\n Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless in Black.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The fabric covering the top of the headband for the Black model is now truly black instead of the dark grey from before, and Sennheiser is going for a more rounded aesthetic, with the company\u2019s logo on both sides now encased in a circular, metal disk.<\/p>\n One of the bigger complaints the Momentum 4 Wireless received was that the clamping force was too tight, causing pain after prolonged periods of wearing. Sennheiser seems to have reduced this slightly, with the headphones remaining comfortable on the head without causing pinching or jaw fatigue<\/b> even after four consecutive hours of wear. We\u2019ll test this further over the coming weeks to see if that remains the case for longer periods.<\/p>\n Just like before, there\u2019s only one single physical button for power and pairing. Everything else is handled by the touch-sensitive panel on the right earcup<\/b>, and in addition to the usual swipes and taps, there\u2019s a new two-finger double-tap to toggle Dolby Atmos, which is handy. However, it must be noted that Dolby Atmos with head-tracking will be enabled in an upcoming firmware update.<\/p>\n The new metallic accents are pretty nice.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Four microphones on each side handle ANC and transparency duties, with Sennheiser claiming the Momentum 5 Wireless is up to three times more effective at reducing voice chatter<\/b>. After a quick test in the office and on public transport, we can safely say that Sennheiser has definitely improved ANC performance with the Momentum 5 Wireless. If you want to ignore everybody in the office while you get work done, this will work perfectly.<\/p>\n Inside, the headphones get the same 42mm dynamic transducer<\/b> as before, which is manufactured at Sennheiser\u2019s Tullamore factory. There\u2019s support for high-res wireless codecs up to aptX Lossless<\/b>, but it\u2019s still missing out on Sony\u2019s LDAC codec.<\/p>\n We did our quick test of the headphones with AAC on an iPhone and running aptX HD on the iBasso DX300 DAP. While it sounds perfectly fine with AAC, we definitely recommend running it with a high-res codec like aptX HD or aptX Lossless because everything just opens up so much more. There\u2019s more detail and resolution, the soundstage is wider and there\u2019s more depth to tracks.<\/p>\n The headphones are running Bluetooth 5.4 out of the box, but will be upgraded to Bluetooth 6.0<\/b> via a future firmware update, which is exciting since it should mean more reliable connectivity and lower latency. Make sure you download the Smart Connect Plus app (not the older Smart Connect app) to get these updates and access to features like the new custom eight-band EQ<\/b>, sound personalisation, and more.<\/p>\n The 700mAh battery inside provides up to 57 hours<\/b> of playback time, and that\u2019s with ANC activated. This is decent, it\u2019s also slightly lower than the 60 hours of the Momentum 4 Wireless. Nevertheless, it\u2019s a small price to pay for having user-replaceable batteries. All it takes is a simple Phillips head screwdriver, and you\u2019ll be able to change out the internal battery yourself without having to send your headphones in to Sennheiser. This is great for users who intend to keep these headphones for a long time.<\/p>\n Thin, but protective.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The headphones come with a very sleek hard-shell case, which is 20% smaller than before, and there\u2019s a nice indentation in the rear for easier carrying. This thinner case will make it much easier to travel with, and I can\u2019t wait to bring it with me on my next flight.<\/p>\n Contrary to rumours, the earcups don\u2019t fold in on themselves, which is a bit of a shame.<\/p>\n That\u2019s all we have for now.
