{"id":55364,"date":"2026-05-26T05:56:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T21:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=55364"},"modified":"2026-05-26T05:56:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T21:56:36","slug":"tiktok-launches-safety-guide-for-singapore-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=55364","title":{"rendered":"TikTok launches safety guide for Singapore families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Families can get practical tips and strategies to manage their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/tech\/new-resources-launched-to-help-parents-guide-childrens-digital-habits?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">children\u2019s digital habits<\/span><\/a> and have safer experiences on TikTok, with a new set of local resources by the social media platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Called the Family Digital Check-In Guide, it adds to a growing pool of materials available here to help parents with device use and screen time, and aims to encourage families to have open conversations about how they use the platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The launch of the resources comes amid growing awareness of the need for parents to have conversations with their children about their screen use, rather than relying on only restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Available online on the TikTok app and the <a href=\"https:\/\/activity.tiktok.com\/magic\/eco\/runtime\/release\/7636248708677503752?appType=tiktok&amp;magic_page_no=1&amp;append_common_params=1&amp;lang=en-SG&amp;region=SG&amp;use_spark=1&amp;productKey=tiktok&amp;ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">TikTok Singapore Digital Hub<\/span><\/a>, the printable toolkit and a simplified, mobile-friendly version of the guide are designed to help families reflect on their digital habits through a quiz, and set practical safety boundaries together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The guide includes an overview of TikTok\u2019s safety features, such as family-pairing for accounts and a screen-time dashboard, as well as conversation prompts that families can use to better understand their online experiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It will also include a video by\u00a0local content creator\u00a0Denise Teo, 28, known online as Supercatkei, about how Singaporean parents and teens can navigate digital safety in everyday life. It is complex, fast-moving and deeply consequential for our children,\u201d said Ms Rahayu, adding that parents are looking for practical, accessible support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She said the IMDA website contains varied resources for parents tailored to different milestones, such as when children receive their first device, set up their first social media account or play their first online game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Rahayu said the Ministry of Digital Development and Information has also, since November 2025, worked with community partners on a series of workshops to support parents in their local communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">From July 2026, TikTok and TOUCH Cyber Wellness will conduct workshops in Bukit Batok East, she said. These aim to train more than 100 parents and teens on responsible digital citizenship, social media readiness and online safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Said Ms Rahayu: \u201cParenting in the digital age is a journey that we must navigate together, and the Government will continue to invest in separate from everyday life, said Ms KahnJi Siriprapa Weerachaising, manager of outreach and partnerships at TikTok\u2019s trust and safety department during a panel discussion at the May 25 event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Building healthier digital habits thus requires more than rules alone, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Shem Yao, head of TOUCH Cyber Wellness, echoed this sentiment during the session, adding that young people are aware of online dangers and want their parents to be part of their digital journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cHowever, they are also concerned that their parents\u2019 response to their issues and challenges can be over-reactive,\u201d he and new media, said parents may struggle to keep up with the pace of development of social media platforms and devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo, for many parents, they may only be trying to manage their children\u2019s platform use from the perspective of screen time, but exactly what they are doing on the platforms \u2013 they may not be so aware,\u201d said Dr Pang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She advised parents not to approach conversations about screen use and social media as \u201caddressing a problem\u201d, but with curiosity instead about their children\u2019s online habits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is never too late, regardless of the children\u2019s age, to start engaging them in these conversations, said Dr Pang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Agreeing, Mr Yao added: \u201cWhatever the kids are doing, just get into the mix&#8230; It\u2019s really important to know what they are doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen there is knowledge and understanding, it will lead to greater empathy.
