{"id":55332,"date":"2026-05-26T02:31:41","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T18:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=55332"},"modified":"2026-05-26T02:31:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T18:31:41","slug":"dbs-bank-fraud-ex-manager-jailed-for-6%c2%bd-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=55332","title":{"rendered":"DBS bank fraud: Ex-manager jailed for 6\u00bd years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->A former manager with DBS Bank who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/former-manager-with-dbs-bank-admits-cheating-7-victims-including-his-uncle-of-over-1m?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">cheated seven\u00a0victims,\u00a0including his own uncle,<\/span><\/a> of nearly $1.4 million in total, was sentenced to 6\u00bd years\u2019 jail on May 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The bulk of the money was used to fund his online gambling habit, wedding and renovations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In April, Benjamin Chung Hiang Wee, 32, pleaded guilty to six counts of cheating linked to five victims, who were duped into handing over more than $1 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Each victim had transferred between $66,550 and $441,850 to him. He also admitted\u00a0to dealing with the benefits of crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On at least 32 occasions between April 2023 and April 2024, he transferred more than $823,000 of his ill-gotten gains from his bank accounts to other accounts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chung, who started working as a wealth planning manager in January 2019,\u00a0had his employment terminated in November 2023 after he breached certain undisclosed regulatory requirements as a financial adviser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In earlier proceedings, the court heard that the largest sum of money he had taken \u2013 $441,850 \u2013 was from his 62-year-old uncle, an odd-job worker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chung, whose job scope included recommending and selling financial products from insurance company Manulife (Singapore), had convinced his uncle that he could earn between 4 per cent and 5 per cent in interest if he invested in a \u201ctwo-year fixed deposit scheme\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Deputy Public Prosecutor Joseph Gwee said earlier: \u201cIn truth, the whole fixed deposit scheme never existed, and (Chung) used the money&#8230;
