{"id":54675,"date":"2026-05-23T15:04:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T07:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=54675"},"modified":"2026-05-23T15:04:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T07:04:38","slug":"surgeons-perform-first-brain-tumour-removal-through-eye-socket-in-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=54675","title":{"rendered":"Surgeons perform first brain tumour removal through eye socket in Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 A team of surgeons from the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has removed a 2.5cm brain tumour through a patient\u2019s eye socket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The eight-hour surgery, which harnessed a technique used for the first time <!-- -->here <!-- -->to remove a tumour, was carried out in <!-- -->November<!-- -->, and the patient, 38-year-old Teong Wen Han, was able to leave the hospital after only three days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Teong, a learning and development manager, suffered a seizure on <!-- -->Oct 9<!-- --> before crashing his car on the Central Expressway (CTE), damaging four vehicles and <!-- -->destroying<!-- --> a lamp post near the Bishan exit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe last thing I remembered was passing some fruits to my parents before starting my journey. I regained consciousness at the hospital with my neck in a brace and I was lying on a spinal board,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Teong said that according to a paramedic, the witness who called the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had told them he was \u201cunconscious and twitching\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo at the emergency department, I went through several tests, including a CT (computed tomography) scan, to ascertain why I crashed,\u201d he told The Straits Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">From the scan, doctors found a 2.5cm brain tumour behind his right eye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Teong said the closest thing to a symptom that he experienced was a headache every morning, \u201cbut that was solved after my morning coffee\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI always thought it was because of the lack of caffeine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The tumour was growing from the protective layer covering his brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its location also made it hard to reach if surgeons adopted the traditional open approach, where a section of the skull is removed to create wide access to the brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It was also in a high-risk area. \u201cDue to its location, it was more difficult to reach because it is at the base of the skull and the brain is on top of it,\u201d NNI neurosurgeon Jensen Ang explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt was also quite close to the optic nerve as well as some of the blood vessels and the cranial nerve that controls the eyeball movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The surgical team, comprising two neurosurgeons \u2013 Dr Ang and Associate Professor Ang Beng Ti \u2013 an ophthalmologist, and <!-- -->an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist,<!-- --> opted for a minimally invasive surgical technique through the eye socket, called transorbital neuroendoscopic surgery (TONES).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"portrait inline-media-wrapper\" style=\"--aspect-article-portrait:480 \/ 1418\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSurgery is all about developing the safest corridor of approach to something, so that we do not disrupt critical structures along the way,\u201d said Professor Ang, a senior neurosurgeon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since Mr Teong\u2019s tumour was right behind the eye socket, \u201crather than going in from the top, we can go in from the front\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Traditionally, surgeons would have <!-- -->opened<!-- --> the skull near the back of the eye socket and <!-- -->removed small sections<!-- --> of bone at the skull base to create a <!-- -->clearer, more direct path<!-- --> to the tumour, to minimise disruption to delicate brain tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe covering of the brain or the meninges needs to be cut. That is the layer from which the tumour arises.
